g74sx-3de fan noise

Retired
Not applicable
I recently picked up a g74sx-3de. Ive been using it for about a week now. A few days ago i noticed a slight whirring sound coming from the fans. It changes pitch every second up and down while idling. Its Really starting to bother me cause i know its there. Could i have a faulty fan or is this normal? Wondering if someone could shed some insight on what info i have given.

You sure it's a fan? Is there a disc in your ODD?

Im sure its the cpu+gpu fan. im running crysis 2 right now and the sound is more pronounced. Ive been reading up on dissasembly but dont know what to do when i get to the fans. I lift the laptop up and i move my ear under the case where the fans are located. Its like a zzzzzzzzzz, very noticable.

Well, if you disassemble it to the point you can take out your fan, you may void your warranty.

That sound is like the fan is rubbing against something. At this point, I'd say either try to exchange it or set up an RMA so you can hopefully get it fixed. But I'm not sure they consider a whirring fan a problem.

Mine is certainly quiet enough that it doesn't bother me even if I'm not listening to any media or games. Even under load it's no place near annoying.

sounds like a bad bearing in the fan.

What you're describing doesn't really sound normal. You should hear them spin up and down according to load but I don't think it should be "whirring". Perhaps you got a fan with a bad bearing?

I don't think I'd jump to disassembly. If you have a problem with a recent purchase you should RMA. That's what the warranty is for.
