G74S issues.... NEED HEEEEELP!

Hello everyone, I'm new around here.

I Have a tight schedule and haven't been able to look around for my answers in different threads. I hope I'm not reposting issues that have already been discussed but I kind of f-ed up.

I own a G74S and started seeing these issues around 3 months ago.

First as I played my games I noticed that throughout all of them I couldn't run and jump at the same time if I pressed the "W" key to run. This happens in WOW, D&D Neverwinter, Battlefield, etc.

Then I noticed that my computer would start opening searches erratically and uncontrollably at times being just at my homepage or in a internet browser. This started getting very annoying as I believed it was a virus of some sort but my I couldn't find it in any of the different anti-viruses that I tried. At the time this happened I was paying for the default anti-virus that came with the computer, then switched to avg, still no success.

So I did what I thought was best. Upgrade from windows 7 to 8 and start fresh.

It didn't help at all and now my computer won't even acknowledge itself as a ASUS computer. Most of my keyboard functionality is gone too and my games just look disgusting for the power this computer has.

I'm not big at IT stuff. If you know how to fix these issues please walk me through it step by step.

Thank you for reading.

Best thing you could do is get rid of Win8 for starters. Have you ran a sfc/scannow to check for corrupted system files? Heres a link to a tutorial on how to do that : http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

A reinstall of Win7 would negate the need for that though. Have you ran a Disk Check? Check your hard disk for errors

You can solve some computer problems and improve the performance of your computer by making sure that your hard disk has no errors.

Click to open Computer.

Right-click the hard disk that you want to check, and then click Properties.

Click the Tools tab, and then, under Error-checking, click Check now. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

To automatically repair problems with files and folders that the scan detects, select Automatically fix file system errors. Otherwise, the disk check will report problems but not fix them.

To perform a thorough disk check, select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. This scan attempts to find and repair physical errors on the hard disk itself, and it can take much longer to complete.

To check for both file errors and physical errors, select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

Click Start.

Depending on the size of your hard disk, this might take several minutes. For best results, don't use your computer for any other tasks while it is checking for errors.

Note
If you select Automatically fix file system errors for a disk that is in use (for example, the partition that contains Windows), you'll be prompted to reschedule the disk check for the next time you restart your computer.

You DO only have ONE Anti-Virus installed on your machine, correct? I'm talking A/V and not Malware.

Yes only one, I'm aware of the issues of having more. Now there is a problem with going back to win7. I don't have my original win7 disks and I didn't make any kind of backup for it... I know... Noob move.

Now I do remember that for a WHILLE my computer was telling me before it would start that there was an issue with one of the drives but every time it would try to repair the issue it would never succeed and it would remain the same. I do recall going through the process you just explained once back when I was in win7.

O.K. Have you considered a new drive? I'm going to post a link to a tutorial on how to migrate your O.S. to a SSD. In the tutorial theres a link to a official Windows download where you can get a .iso of Win7. Do you still have the COA for it? The sticker that came on your machine. You'll need it to activate the newly installed O.S.. This is all assuming you want to go back to 7 of course.

It sounds like your drive is bad or at least has a lot of bad sectors. I would switch it out myself.

Remember to backup your network adapters as they are one of the very few you'll need to install personally. Get the ATK package for your machine from Asus as you'll need it for the backlit keyboard etc.

A new hard drive then?

and is it possible to get the ATK package for win8? I already paid for it, might as well use it.

Said you cant go back to win7 as you dont have your inst. disk, NO PROBLEM, just Taking a long shot here now.

Have you looked at the bottom of your G74 machine to see if maybe just maybe youre lucky and you have a Win7 sticker there with a serial number on it, as many of the G74 were sold with Win7 preinstalled. Im sure you probably allready know if yours came with that or not, but hey, sometimes i forgett stuff i have too:)

I bought my G74Sx second hand, and was pleasantly surprised to find it there, after install i just had to call microsoft activation service, with the serial microsoft win7 key at bottom to get an ID number to punch in and make it work just 100% perfect...

cause I think doing a new clean install and going back to win7 is your best option, or if not that then do a clean install of win8 rather than an uppgrade.
I ran win 8 on mine for a while just to test it and had no problems other then not liking win8, but thats another story...

Your G74sx should have a recovery/format (with win7) program, don't remember where I found it but it works. Win8 for this machine is so useless.

If he's installed Win8 over it its not there anymore. There's a link I posted to get a official MS approved .iso for 7 embedded in the tutorial. All he would need is the COA on the sticker on his machine.

I agree completely with you about Win8 btw.

Im sure you can order a recovery disk if you dont want to mess with drivers. otherwise get a Windows 7 disk download and DL everything from the asus site, some things like your wifi and gpu drivers you may want to find elsewhere. Heres a list of my devices to help point you in the right downloading direction.31941
