G74 CPU/GPU thermal paste and polish heatsink

I was bored today, so I decided to tear apart my G74 to replace the thermal paste and polish the contact for the heatsink. Everything worked perfectly minus one broken tab that holds the keyboard down (big deal, right?).

The old thermal paste was dry and nasty. Used some new Artic Silver 5 and polsied the contact points. Should help some!

looking very good there, I wish I had the guts to do the same on my G73SW

I dont know the temps prior to doing this. I have been running Folding@Home full tilt for the past 36-hours. Highest temp reached was 80ºC (176ºF). This was running at 100% CPU, GPU and Memory. As well as full speed internet.

Played LOL last night for a few hours with no real issues. I wonder if the cooling fans have more power as they werent making much noise.

I dont recommend the G73 being torn down, I hear its a lot more difficult. But I personally have never tried it

I tore mien a few times, it's not bad. Just be slow and methodical and watch for the ribon cables.

What method did you use to polish your sinks? I'm tempted to try this

Great job on the polishing. I've touched mine up, but nothing near yours.

G73's are fairly straight forward compared to many laptops that I've worked on. As TeRmInAsHuNaToR said take your time, don't force anything. Look out for wires/cables. I'd love to see more people work on their own laptops, people should be familiar with the way they work/built.

The whole process of polishing them only took me about 20 minutes. I used a little too aggressive sandpaper as I was out of what I usually have

-1000 or 1500 grit sand paper
-Rubbing compound (I use turtle wax, any brand works)
-Polishing compound (turtle wax again, but crappy quality IMO)
-Mothers Mag and Alloy Polishing Compound (this is a MUST), http://www.mothers.com/02_products/05100-05101.html

The mothers is the trick. Its some of the best compound Ive ever used, I know there is better stuff out there, Im just not sure what it is.

Make sure to use microfiber/flannel rags for the final polishing. The copper is real soft. Even the rags alone left superficial scratches in the surface. Though none of which showed up in the photos
