Just got my G73sw and i've tried putting in both blank DVD-R and anti-virus CD and the drive can't seem to detect them. Has anyone encountered this before?

It could be disconnected or faulty. Does it spin up at all? Make some sort of sound? Activity light blinks?

If it isn't the physical connection (i.e. SATA connector), you should insert a blu-ray disc. If it plays fine, it's almost certainly a faulty lens/laser that is causing your problem.

Good call Flint.

Wasn't able to make it work for about 3 days. Now that I went back to the seller, it works but intermittently.
Also, i'm noticing that it reads the media slowly and executes the autorun routine after about 30-40 secs after inserting a normal disc

It sounds like a dirty lens or misalignment. As Flint stated, different media actually uses different lasers so you might want to try something different. At any rate I wouldn't want a drive that can't read a good portion of my media. Exchange it while you can.
