G73sw 2nd RMA .. HELP / Advice needed!

Hello,

I'm new to the forum, but am in need of some advice help, mostly help... lol So here's my story, I brought an asus g73sw in June 2011 for my birthday gift to myself, around 3 months after I got it I started receiving the famed kernel nvidia driver has stopped working and recovered successfully errors. When these happened I was just surfing the web, or working on files for my job, nothing too heavy. At first I was getting the slow mouse and then the machine would completely freeze, forcing me to do a hard reboot. Then I started getting kernel errors, and whatnot. I restored my machine from the back up discs I had made when I got it, and updated everything including drivers. After I did that I started getting these errors again, and then I started getting them so much that i was getting 15-20 in a 5 min span. So I sent my lovely little machine in at MY cost , lovely right lol.. They received the machine, and within a day they emailed me stating that they had finished the repairs, and my laptop was on its way back. Relieved somewhat that my machine was coming back to me so soon, and relishing in the fact that it would be fixed I was a happy camper... I received my laptop back, and turned it on, they had not done anything to it as far as I could tell, they did not even restore the os.. I looked at the little piece of paper they sent back with it, and they said that they were able to identify and the issue was duplicated, and for some odd reason they replaced the LCD bezel, which i thought was weird.. So I turn my machine on thinking everything is great, WRONG in less than 15 minutes of having it on just idle on my desktop it pops up the lovely black screen, and flashes that lovely kernel error once again, not once but 3 times. So I called back Asus, and got another RMA number and sent my laptop back today, the same freaking day I received it back.. Had it for 6 hours, and already its on its way back to CA.. So my question is when you send in your machine for the 2nd time for the same issue, do they escalate your machine, or am I to expect the same thing to happen again? I really hope that if they can't fix this issue or do not know what is going on with it to at least offer me a replacement, anyone have this happen to them, or know what the heck is going on... ?? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Sorry for the long rambling post bit frustrated here bit being the biggest understatement in the world lol

Thanks,
lily

Do you remember the drivers you use from nvidia? Try going to 275.33 or lower, they have helped me by a lot, almost eliminating those nasty errors (i'm now getting one or two every week).

Hi and Welcome 🙂

Since you have RMA two times, I would call the Asus Repair center and demand them to see if the issue gets fixed after they replace anything on your notebook.
And also since you have to pay from your own wallet, they should do a equal job if it's under warranty or not.

Before you sent the notebook in for the first time, do you remember which graphic driver you had installed? and which graphic driver you have now?

Sometimes it could be issues with the graphics drivers that can cause the issue or other programs trying to take advantage and then it crash.

You could try to backup the important files you have (documents, pictures and so on) and do a factory restore (push F9 when the Asus splash screen shows up during bootup) or a clean install (clean install is the best oppertunity since then you will not have all the preinstalled bloatware and other drivers installed on your notebook from factory restore) .

If that restore/clean install wouldn't work I would suspect a bad graphic card =/

And also you could download CCleaner run the register check, to clean your system for a lot useless files and such and see if that helps.
Asus G73SW-91058V 3D
- Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300
- BIOS 205

I have tried everything did a system restore from the back up disks, I was on the 285 driver at the time, that did not work, tried updating the driver to the 291 driver that did not work. I did the factory restore, rolled the driver back to 261 I believe, that did not work.. I do not have this issue when I play games, only when my pc is idle.. When I was getting it ready to send back and copying my files to my external it was doing it constantly like every 10 seconds.. Yeah that link I followed it exactly and I was still having this issue.. I started having this problem 3 months after I brought the notebook.. I have called and spoken with Asus throughout this whole thing, just really upset that no matter what I do it does not help this issue. I don't think its the driver because I've had so many drivers installed and such.. gah this is annoying, and I am without a laptop again...

Try running a game from 30min to a couple of hours. Check if that game doesn't freeze with the aforementioned error.

I play games all the time for long hours, I played the witcher 2 for 3 hours 2 weeks ago and nothing happened. As soon as I was finished playing a couple of hours later started the machine back up, and then within 5 mins it was doing that again just sitting on the desktop. I don't know what is wrong with the machine, it does not do this when I am playing games, it only seems to kernel error when it is just sitting there, or when i am looking online.

Some cards seem to have problems managing voltages, in this case when going from 3D clocks to 2D clocks (and viceversa) your card stops and gets busy, and Windows senses this as if your drivers stopped working, which causes the freezes.

Please check the Event Viewer and try to find any problem related to the source "Display" or "nvlddmkm", and how often do you get them.
