G73S LCD Problem while playing games

Hi all,

I bought a G73S about four months ago in order to game. The "newest" games I have on it are The Witcher and Borderlands. The rest are old games like Fallout 2 etc.

I have no problems using the G73S for surfing and playing older games. But when I play The Witcher and Borderlands, this problem will crop up after a few hours of play (or earlier if I had already been using my laptop for surfing/working in the first place). The screen will suddenly have green/yellow artifacts popping up all around it, ghost images of the option/inventory screens will linger, and thin blue bars will appear at the edges of the screen. I noticed that when this happens, if I rested my wrist on the laptop, or hit keys located at the center of the keyboard a little harder, the artifacts/ghost images will sometimes disappear. Or sometimes, doing that would cause the screen to flicker crazily. It used to be that this screen problems won't stop the game, but recently the laptop has been hanging once this problem appears.

In case it's a problem due to overheating, I have already tried cooling pads, propping the G73S up with cooling balls, playing in an a/c room etc but nothing seems to work.

Please give me some suggestions to remedy this situation! Thank you!

Sounds to me it's possibly a unsecure heatsink, or some other hardware issue with the GPU. If you have the expertise, I would open her up and check the GPU for heatsink mounts that may not be fully secure (screwed in). If not, then see if you have a local Asus ASP and have them check it.

If it's loose, you may want to redo the TIM because if air is exposed to it during heat-up from GPU, it'll dry out. Speaking of which, have you monitored the temps during use?

I don't think that it's due to heat. Booted up the laptop for the 1st time yesterday and immediately launched Borderlands. Problem quoted appeared within 10mins of play and the laptop hanged.

Thank you for the advise on the unsecured heatsink. I don't have the expertise, but will approach a local Asus ASP. Thanks!

Well, only a minute or so is needed to reach maximum temperature so that doesn't really prove anything conclusive. If you can get local ASUS to look at it yes that would be good.
