G73JW keeps locking up

Hey all,

Been having this problem for a while and have been lurking for a while too, trying out the possible solutions handed by members. Basically my G73JW started locking up at completely random moments, sometimes while playing Football Manager (steam controlled game) or just when surfing the net with Google Chrome.

I did clean install, full driver update (especially the chipset one), and have throttlestop 4.00 running with C1E disabled and with other C-states at C1. But still the locks keep coming and going. Sometimes after restarting I get a message saying Windows recovered from a serious error and if I want to check online for a solution (in vain). Administrative events are riddled with the WHEA logger Event ID:17 Express PCI Root Port which seems to indicate a problem with the chipset right?

Anyone having similar issues but with a novel solution? I prefer not to RMA it.

O, the only hardware change is swapping one of the HDD (I have the non-SSD ones) with an SSD of Corsair Series 3 (Sandforce).

Another 4 lock-ups since my last update... Anyone knows how I could diagnose what is causing it? Hardware, software? How do I approach this and get to the bottom of it?

Did the lock-ups start before or after the clean install?

Can you list the drivers you installed, and what security software you're using?

Lockups started before the clean install. My memory is failing me to know whether they started before or after I swapped the HDD for the SSD, but diagnostics I ran on SSD gave no problems. I also had the SSD written full of 0's before the clean install of Windows 7. I basically used the Windows 7 image and drivers from the thread started by JRD1st (nvida I installed the 290.53 notebook). As security software I use Microsoft Security Essentials.

I wanted to attach the WER-12667-0.sysdata.xml file but I get a message it's an invalid file... can I send the content to you in a private message? don't want to make this thread too messy....

You may want to try installing the latest Intel Chipset driver using the -overall switch to force it to reinstall all chipset drivers. However, it is disconcerting that the Windows 7 clean install did not resolve the issue. I'd suspect you installed the latest Intel Chipset driver at that time (not sure if you used the -overall switch, but would think it would not be necessary on the first Intel Chipset driver install).

http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/7737-windows-7-WHEA-Warnings-Event-ID-17 indicates the user resolved the repeated Event ID:17 Express PCI Root Port issue by reinstalling the Intel Chipset driver WITH the -overall switch (but did not report a lockup as part of the issue).

http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/100569-lots-bsod-hungup-lots-event17-whea-logger.html reports, System Lockups, Bugcheck 0x124 BSOD's, and repeated Event ID:17 Express PCI Root Port i on a desktop system. This user resolved all these issues by installing the Intel Chipset driver WITH the -overall switch. So if you haven't done this, it's worth a try.

In http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/547487-g73jh-whea-logger-eventid-17-a.htm... a user resolved Bugcheck 0x124 BSOD's by updating the video driver. Still, I would've thought your clean install with new video driver would've resolved this issue.

However, your reported experience points more to a hardware issue, since it persisted after a clean Windows 7 install with updated drivers. This makes me suspicious of your SSD. Is it running the latest firmware?

thanks for your extended research! My SSD does have the latest firmware (it's the first thing I did when I got it)...
I did not install the chipset driver with the -overall switch as I did it on a clean install. But it was not the first driver I installed, I think it was even the last one (meaning I first installed the GPU driver, ATK, Realtek, ...) .


The chipset driver version I have is 9.2.0.1030, while I see Chastity has the 9.2.0.1025 in his thread. I guess the latest, the greatest does count here? I'll try re-installing the chipset driver with the -overall switch, just to see if it makes a difference.

Since a day or 3 if I shutdown the laptop properly, it doesn't want to start up in the first try. Maybe this is correlated, maybe not... And sometimes the right fan (GPU if I'm not mistaken, the side of the USB3.0 port) just speeds up with no apparent reason (like just right now, only running Chrome)

Well, I did the -overall switch install and for a moment I thought the problem was solved but 2,5 hours later I had another lockup... just when I was saving a game in Football Manager which corrupted it :s

I wonder if doing a clean install, re-installing the drivers before any other software is put on it and checking of the WHEA logger keeps appearing in the administrative events is the way to go to find who's the culprit...
