Hey guys, so I have an g73JH I just bought off of CL
I knew it needed a new battery so I bought one.

If I go to power the laptop on, it'll power on for about 15 seconds, then turn off.
if I power on with AC adapter it'll go to windows, and if I unplug in windows, it'll stay on battery power until the laptop dies.

Am I missing something?

That is weird. Did you purchase a genuine ASUS battery, or a 3rd party one that is listed as compatible? Sometimes the BIOS battery-detection chips don't like 3rd party batteries, and that can cause problems. Though when that happens, I've seen it in Windows as well.

I have a 3rd party battery in my Asus G73jh notebook. It only cost $30. But it works well, lasts 2 hrs. But I have to be careful about not turning off the notebook and leaving the battery charger plugged in and charging for some extended period. I did that once and the battery got out of sync. It started flashing red and green. I removed the battery after shutting down the notebook. Then turned it back on after replacing the battery with the charger plugged in. Then it was back in sync and haven't had any problems since then. 😄

My own guess is that the cheap batteries are not telling the notebook when they are fully charged if the notebook is off. So when you turn the notebook on, the battery status is indeterminate to the notebook. That is why I don't charge while the notebook is off. Otherwise it seems to be functioning perfectly.

It is definitely that battery.

Yes, it is a function of the battery electronics. The charge controller chips in the battery cost a good bit of money, so the knock-off manufacturers won't put them in to save money. That causes problems for the BIOS, which often relies on the battery to know when it's charged. Windows can sometimes determine, and sometimes not.
