g73jh Extreme project

So here it goes, I got a g73jh and as most of us know. Despite the fact that it is still a formidable rig, it is not quite on the same par as a gaming desktop or a more top end gaming laptop like a fully loaded m18 or Clevo. So I have decided to upgrade the g73jh to its absolute max and see just what this machine is capable of.

Naturally of course I am not made of money so the upgrades will be done incrementally.

Stock setup:
i7 720qm @ 1.6/2.8
8 gigs DDR3 @ 1333
HD 5870m @ 700/1000
x2 320gb HDDs
150w ASUS Powersupply

I realize that this project might require some engineering to get the gfx card in since the the ASUS PCB is layed out a little differently than the other mainstream manufacturers boards, that there can be vBIOS issues as far as getting the VGA & HDMI ports to work properly and that if the MB and PS can feed the new gfx card and extreme OCed cpu up to there full potential.

If any of you have any real experience with these planned upgrades please let me know, save a guy some grey hair 😄

On a Chinese bbs I saw a topic , a gamer change his G73jh into G73sw(motherboard has changed)and then he change the video card into hd6970m (dell alienware's)(first he try gtx570m ,but the bios doesn't support it),the fan always works in high speed,so he makes a small PCB to control the fan,also he modified the heat sink, so it can cover the hd6970m. Now it works perfectly.

BTW: his work is fixing laptop

Thanks for your reply illusion, that thread looked really interesting. I had to go by the pics and google translator but none the less it was quite informative. I must say the man whole built that rig with the sw mb & cpu coupled with the 6970m is quite talented, for example his pcb controlling the fan.

but how did he make the pcb to control fan?

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just sell that and buy the new G75 when it comes out soon?

Since I plan on upgrading both my cpu and gpu I figured why not really push the overclocks on the ones that I got and see what they can do before I swap em out.

And I think I may have set a new 720qm+5870m jh 3dmark11 record or atleast certainly better than anything I have seen to date. P2604 3DMarks 😄

So far with these clock settings I was able to run prime95 for a 24h stress test failure free. Run furmark for an hour problem free and of course 3dmark11 problem free.

I don't think I can push my 720qm much further or at least not any further using this PC3-10700 ram. At the moment this 1333MHz ram is running at 1450MHz and any more than that I believe will cause instability.

As for the 5870m, it runs very stable at quite cool at 855/1110MHz if I bump the vram up past 1125 it gets unstable and gives almost no performance increase. However I still believe there is more head room on the gpu clock. Although I am sure due to the hardwired voltage of the ASUS cards it will limit my overclocks below the cards full potential 😕
