G73JH Black screen :(

So the other night I Rebooted My G73jh, went to grab some more coffee amd came back to a Black/Blank Screen. Tested the vga out and the HDMI but no response. Called Asus and they claim they won't RMA since the 1 year manufacturers warranty is up by a couple of months, which really doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling about the tech support.

This is the most expensive system I've ever purchased as I usually build my own and to have the system crap out after little more than a year of light use really makes me a little perturbed.

I'm fairly familiar with builds/repair, So I've been throught the usual bit's of checking seats, Battery in/out reset. Cmos Reset. I haven't as of yet pulled the mobo but from what I've been able to see, there doesn't appear to be any burn spots, fat caps or lack of thermal paste on the GPU.

I wanted to reply in this thread also. I just had the same problem tonight. My G73Jh, which is about 2 years old now, I wasn't having any problems the night before. I shut it off normally and closed it. Tonight I opened it up, and lights came on, seemed to be booting but black screen. I tried the 'magnet sensor' thing that I saw suggested but no luck.
I do a lot of desktop repair stuff but laptops are such a pain, I really didn't want to take it apart to find out it was a bad GPU or something. I had sent Asus an email, even though I am out of the warranty but then I randomly just tried to turn it on again about 2 hours after originally trying to.
It said it had failed to start, I started windows normally and it seems fine now. However, now I am concerned as to what it might have been and if I should be worried about shutting it off again. LIke if this is going to become a normal thing. Any thoughts?

Well, while it is working I would locate the magnetic sensor. It's much easier when you can see the display blink off to know that you have the right spot. But if it's not that then it could also be a loose display cable. That would be fixable but a pain.
A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where a train stops. On my desk, I have a work station…

I can confirm that something is obviously wonky with it. Today when I went to turn it on, I had the same issue. It only worked after I spent a bunch of time opening and closing it, taking out the battery, unplugging it, turning it on and off. Its hard to tell what exactly made it turn on, but it finally did after about 10 minutes of trying. Once it is on, it works fine and never crashes or has any issues.

Problems again... I was playing Skyrim and all of a sudden it freezes. Nothing I try is working so I have to hard reboot. Once it reboots... black screen and I can't make it work.

The first time ever the black screen appeared was after a hard reboot one month ago. After windows froze while doing mostly nothing..

Unfortunately, I've yet to read about anyone recovering from the "boot to black screen" issue without a repair involving motherboard and/or VGA replacement. The workarounds of discharging the laptop or multiple reboots have only temporary effect.

@cl_scott, who has career experience in laptop repair, indicates defective capacitors can cause this problem in http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?23328-Asus-53S-Won-t-Turn-On&p=162536#post162536. This idea is supported by observations that the behavior becomes more frequentl over time.

My laptop had been fine for a month or so but tonight it suffered the same black screen as before. I happened to notice your post about removing everything, battery included, holding the power button and trying again. This time, it turned right on.
Is this a sign of bad caps and impending doom?

My G60J has the black screen since this morning, I let it open during the night connected via VGA to a Monitor and this morning i was wake-up by the FAN. Black screen was displaying, I pressed the power button, switched off the laptop and when I try to power it up, I get the black screen with no post. I have read the forum and none of the teaks and tricks worked for me. In conclusion, should I buy a new video card for this laptop or just buy a new laptop?

If you're capable of pulling out the video card you could try pulling the cmos battery on the mnotherboard for a couple of hours and seeing if that works for you. It did work for me in getting the system back up and running. I will add to that tho that you are probably on the verge of a dead laptop sooo....

My recomnedation would be purchasing a new laptop(with a different brand name). IF you're past warranty asus will tell you to take to your point of purchase or send it to a retail repair facility. Buying the video card for the g60 will run around $200+SH for aused part.
