Well, while it is working I would locate the magnetic sensor. It's much easier when you can see the display blink off to know that you have the right spot. But if it's not that then it could also be a loose display cable. That would be fixable but a pain.

Unfortunately, I've yet to read about anyone recovering from the "boot to black screen" issue without a repair involving motherboard and/or VGA replacement. The workarounds of discharging the laptop or multiple reboots have only temporary effect.
@cl_scott, who has career experience in laptop repair, indicates defective capacitors can cause this problem in http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?23328-Asus-53S-Won-t-Turn-On&p=162536#post162536. This idea is supported by observations that the behavior becomes more frequentl over time.

My laptop had been fine for a month or so but tonight it suffered the same black screen as before. I happened to notice your post about removing everything, battery included, holding the power button and trying again. This time, it turned right on.
Is this a sign of bad caps and impending doom?

My G60J has the black screen since this morning, I let it open during the night connected via VGA to a Monitor and this morning i was wake-up by the FAN. Black screen was displaying, I pressed the power button, switched off the laptop and when I try to power it up, I get the black screen with no post. I have read the forum and none of the teaks and tricks worked for me. In conclusion, should I buy a new video card for this laptop or just buy a new laptop?
