G73JH Black screen during games

Recently, I've started having a problem where, while playing DotA2, my screen at a point during a match turns black, while everything else continues running. I got a second monitor and mirrored the images, after closing DotA2, a little while later the screen seems to flicker a little then go back to normal. I thought it could be an overheating issue, so I disassembled everything and repasted my GPU/cleaned up/etc, everything is now running in a much lower temperature, but the problem persists.

yeah,You are correct that memory is NOT the cause if a connected external monitor has no video issues.thanks

What is the native resolution (the highest resolution listed in the Windows Screen Resolution dialog) of your laptop display?

What is the native resolution of the external monitor?

How is screen resolution configured in NVIDIA Control Panel? A screenshot may be helpful.
G74SX-A1 - stock hardware - BIOS 202 - 2nd Monitor VISIO VF551XVT

Laptop Display: 1920x1080

External monitor: 1280x1024

When using them duplicated, they're both at 1280x1024, laptop display becomes letterboxed. Seemingly has no impact on when the laptop display goes blank (on both resolutions it goes blank at the same situations)

I'm afraid my GPU isn't NVIDIA, but an ATI one (Mobility Radeon HD 5800 Series). Is there any equivalent information you would like me to gather about it?

No - I think you've provided enough information and performed enough troubleshooting. The results are still consistent with a defective laptop display or LVDS cable.

Since the behavior you report is rather unique, I'd guess it was the display that is causing the problem. The ability to regain video by switching away from the game window sounds more like defective display behavior to me.

I have exactly the same issue...my g73jh is 3 years old.
I first got this problem 9 months ago...then it worked - after some time - without problems until 2 months ago.
On Monday I gave it away in order to repair it... (my estimation is an broken LCD cable but he said it could be GPU).
Do you have any solutions yet?

Yup I have the same issue here. All my hardware is stock and my nvidia driver is updated to the latest version.
My screen goes blank during games but I can hear that the game itself is still running normally in the background. But the issue doesnt occur when I play certain (less processor intensive?) games like FTL and torchlight 2.
Please do update if any solution has been found!

Heh, I actually have the exact same issue, also started with Dota 2. 3 year old G73Jh has worked perfectly fine until two days ago, random black screens started happening while playing games. Installing older and newer drivers didn't work, external monitor displays everything just fine while my laptop's display just flickers or stays black.

Did a complete disassembly but could not notice anything out of the ordinary. 😕

Running on 1920x1080, ATI Radeon 5800 HD series, bios 213, latest vbios.

Edit; specs

Bringing this thread back.

Had this problem for a couple months now. Changed the display cable to no avail, it started just as OP mentioned, then the screen went black permanently. External monitor works fine. When gaming my screen would flicker back on and off again. Sometimes, during games, screen would go all white.

Right now for about two weeks the screen works fine but if I start a game, Diablo 3 for instance, it will go black randomly in less than 3 minutes.

So, anybody with this issue found the gremlin yet?

I have the G73JH-A1

is there a working link to the latest vbios? im running 012.017.000.004.0359.a33g. I cannot keep my g73jh from getting blue pixels then black screen. My bios is 213 but no idea where a link to the vbios is!? HELP

found the vbios upgrade. seems to have fixed my issues. not getting black screen or freezes any more. I found when playing Diablo 3, my g73jh would heat up then eventually shut off. I fixed this by following the youtube video on how to disassemble it and used compressed air to clean everything very well. I also found that the left side fan wasnt working for some reason (loose connection) so that didnt help. Now everything is working...ive played wow, but havent tried D3 yet. I'll update tonight once i get time to play for abit. My cpu temp is running about 50c idle and the gpu temp is about 55c idle. After an hour of wow, gpu was at 70, but still well within what I expected. Before the cleaning, i was running about 110c and that was when it would shut down/freeze

currently running gpu temp is 54c, so its not overheating.
