It sounds like the hard drive is potentially having an issue. You may want to load defaults in the BIOS to ensure nothing is corrupted.
If you can't get the drive to be recognized you may need to extract the drive and connect it to another PC directly or via USB dock to see if it is recognized. If it's recognized then you know it's the machine. If the drive isn't seen by other PCs then the drive may be dead.
In the worst case, sometimes the additional activity caused by a major update can tip over a drive that was ready to fail.
