G73 beats out G75 in performance

A bit discouraging, but it is confirmed that the G73 can get P5408 due to its upgradability. While this is not Asus supported, it is fully possible without thermal issues.

On a side note...

While 7970m is currently fastest mobile card on market... Keep in mind it is also the most drama ridden currently. A friend of mine got an alienware laptop recently with 7970m and has been dealing with constant overheating issues. This is common problem on 7970m (google that topic).

I was about to buy one myself just based on huge benchmark scores that are very desktop worthy... But as you might imagine desktop level performance trapped between inch deep slabs of plastic isnt a lot of breathing room. I am not sure if AMD is going to be able to sort that issue out or not.

So try not to get too jelly... Grass is always greener as they say. I personally would much rather have 680m over 7970m take a huge performance hit, but have a stable cool laptop.

Read the thread. He is experiencing NO thermal issues. NONE. The G73 cooling system is much more efficient than alienware, sager, clevo, MSI... etcetera... Also ... your statement does not make sense. It wouldn't be the "desktop performance" that causes it to overheat, it would be due to issues in a cooling solution to dissipate the heat or using more voltage to generate heat regardless of frequency (Performance). Performance generally correlates to voltage but with different technologies aka architectures you can produce a much more efficient and even higher frequency (lack of better words) without an increase in voltage. Due to specific advances you can actually use LESS.

In short. G73 used a higher end card at high thermals. it can also now use one of the highest mobile GPUs ( you are incorrect in saying the fastest as the GTX 680m is.. But I'll let that go) on the market with no consequence (thermal performance is stable) other than no audio through HDMI which may be resolved through custom VBIOS.

Does that staement apply to the entire 600M series or the 660M also?
Check this out: I have the G75VW with a 660M gpu. The night after UFC 148 was really hot, so my son and I decided to watch the download I had of it outside and have a few beers. He drug his 32" lcd TV outside and I grabbed my G75VW. I used an HDMI cable to conect the two. After getting no audio, I went to Control Panel/Sound to have a look. It said "not plugged in". I had heard of issues with nvidia cards and HDMI audio, so rather than waste time messing with things, I was just going to go with the Headphone jack to 'audio in' on the TV. As soon as I plugged into the headphone jack, audio suddenly started to come thru the HDMI cable to the TV. By time we got done watching the UFC and some other fights, we were rather inebriated, so I forgot all about it until reading your post. I havnt used the HDMI port since, so not sure what was up with it. But, I did in fact get audio thru HDMI.

Just ran nto this roblem a few months ago...G73sw-3DE though...HDMI audio works when I disable the Laptop Audio at the Windows Audio setting...Just select HDMI

Lol who cares? How much does a 7970m cost? then risking your laptop doing the upgrade etc........Not worth it.

Modders who would like to upgrade their G75 to an advanced card down the line who are unable to due to Asus's use of a proprietary MXM solution. 🙂

The impact lies not with the 7970m but future cards down the line. the G73 can go three full generations of GPU. We can only go one with the G75.

Yeah, that is very disappointing. I would like ASUS to go the route of standard MXM boards in their ROG line and sell upgraded CPUs and GPUs, similar the build-your-own-desktop which ASUS is very into. That would make the notebook world a whole lot more exciting. I understand the limitations of a custom mobo form factor, but the G73JH is a testament to the fact that you can upgrade a GPU if you follow standards--isn't that what standards are for?

lol, really? i guess youve never repasted a laptop before. i wouldnt consider it risky at all, ive taken apart my g73 several times, also i would think the price of the card irrelevant to the life it adds to your notebook
