First place to look for information is here https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/ROG-G701VI/ Any different versions would be hardware and componts the cases would be the same. the last 4digits describe which componets are used could be CPU GPU Ram differences

Thanks for the link. That makes it easier.
I was able to dig up that Asus did in fact redesign the g701vi case adding 5 more heatpipes & making it larger overall due to all vi units having thermal issues. The vik is the newer model with adequate cooling. The pictures I posted you can see that it's larger.
I just can't find out if all i7-7820hk (kaby lake) g701 units are the redesigned VIK models. I've seen official spec sheets & reviews with contradicting information...

I couldn't find any info on the VIk at all. Like the GL models are just to thin to have enough free space for cooling.
I would have thought they found that out from the issues with the GL models. I also find it interesting that they changed only 1 letter in the model code and made a complete change of cases.
This Will make it very confusing for anyone trying to buy one. Lots of people didn't get it that the GL models were not the same as the G series or GX Series
Yes, each major vendor will have them set up to there own spec's. Best Buy etc usually use less RAM sometimes a cheaper screen less RAM and Less RAM on the GPU Anything they can change out to make a cheaper price.
Same goes for countries, the different countries around the world also have there own spec'ed out models with there own G701VIK XXXX letters and numbers.
When you buy one of these you have to ensure with the vendor exactly what the specs are!!!!
I like Amazon as they usually sell direct for Asus So you can look up what G701VIK XXXX and be pretty sure Amazon will be selling it as Asus Advertizes.
This is something you really have to pay attention too, it's on you if you don't get what your expecting. If a vendor won't give you the exact specs of the units they are selling move on to one that will.
Also, do pay attention what the storage specs are. Asus sometime will put 2 x 256 GB SSD in and call it 512GB it's not, and you will have both of your m.2 slots filled. So that if you want to upgrade to larger SSD you'll have to lose at least one and 1/2 SSD completely.
Can you link this information you have found on the VIK that it actually has a different Case?
Seems Asus USA is now selling 2 models of the G703 VM and G703VI Both still running Gen 8 CPU's Core I7. with the link I gave you, you can clearly see that 2x 256GB = 512 GB SSD and 1 TB spinner If a person holds out he'll get one with a 512GB SSD and 1TB Spinner. leaving you 1 M.2 SSD slot open for upgrading later. I can't find a G703 VM availible to compare specks with.
