G60VX Heat and CPU?

Hello all,

I bought a G60VX about 6 months or so ago off ebay. It was suposed to have a warranty although It didn't even have a serial sticker...luckily everything came flawless and works well except the heat that the GPU produces is beyond annoying, an not a good thing I'd assume. I'm a left handed user, so I must tilt the laptop sideways to avoid the side vent. I have a ZM-NC2000 Cooler for It also, doesn't help much. The CPU is also a bottleneck at 2GZ.

Does anyone here know If that heat can be fixed somewhat easily? Also, can the CPU and GPU be upgraded? I've read various google topics about this and people said they had success with a p9700 CPU.

I've done that. It actually reaches 190 and then kicks on fan. Is there a way to turn the fan on through bios? I couldn't find It, It's very limited. I couldn't find any software that would work either such as RivaTuner and It doesn't support fan control on this laptop.
I've heard about cutting the blue wire on the GPU to make it run constantly but It's pretty loud and would prefer to reserve the life of the GPU fan.

Anyone here successfully upgraded the CPU?

yeah, they kind of just do that. i did a vent mod on mine and that cooled it, other than that i just use a notebook cooler.

alot of times when they start heating up it has to do with the fan and vents being dirty.

of note is the fact that nvidia installed a fail safe in them, the temp reporting is positive by 8 degrees C, and they're rated for 105-108C.

the powerswitch utility lets them downclock when at the desktop.

you might have to google that one.

lots of people have upgraded the cpu, i'm trying to determine quad compatibility with my board but as of right now i have no clue if it'll work. another option is a faster dual core, especially one with 6mb L2. the intel e8235/8335/8435 are good options, they can be had for cheap on ebay.

i've had my card hit up to 212F. as of right now it still runs like a top. currently idling at 145F.

The utility had no effect.

Considering I have no warranty, I can't void it. I've decided to remove the blue wire. It runs louder but with cooler and fan going, Its sooo cool. =D

120 F GPU atm.
88 F Core 0
84 F Core 1

BF3 was playing at about 25 FPS in beta, good news, should be faster now!

that app has to be run in admin mode. you select powermizer on (if you picked the option that says ac/off battery/on it won't work).

after that the computer has to be restarted.

all that app does is let the video card downclock at the desktop. mine drops from 500Mhz to 200Mhz, and the voltage drops from .95 to .85

be aware that a fan running at full throttle isn't going to last as long as one running at half or three quarters. if you were having some kind of issue where the fan simply wasn't running full throttle, then you may have fixed it.

personally i think these threads about cutting wires like that are going to lead somebody to shorting something out, but that's just like, my opinion, man.

Not to worried about the life of fan. Older laptops, their fans ran all the time with no issues. I also have my laptop go to sleep after 5 minutes of idle, also I shut It off at night so the max hours might be 7 hours per day. The cores were reaching 130 F at 100% CPU usage, and the heat wasnt moving all the time so I think this is better than to fry the CPU. Speedfan still reads the GPU at 190 at full load on gaming although the air is moving a lot, I think It's just the hot heat moving over the sensors.

well at least it's not hard to change the fans. but i've yet to see you list any temperatures that seemed abnormal.

my p7350 is idling at 115F right now, and i oc it to 2.4Ghz all the time. still haven't had issues. the thermal limit on that thing is like 90C.

but it's cool man, glad you're running cooler. try the vent mod next if you're feeling ambitious.
