G56JR notebook not using the dedicated GPU issue

Hey all, about a month ago I bought an Asus Republic of Gamers laptop, namely the G56JR model. I've installed windows 8.1 on it, since Asus did not have any kind of drivers for windows 7. I've installed the normal drivers such as the hotkey, sound drivers etc including the nvidia driver and geforce experience interface. In order to test the laptop in gaming, I've installed Borderlands 2 and Saints Row 4 ( I'll install others in the near future ). When I'm playing a game however, I notice that the graphics are always on low, and even on low settings the laptop kinda struggles to run it smoothly.

I've reached the conclusion that the laptop is using the integrated CPU graphics and not the dedicated GTX 760m graphics. This is where my problems start. I've tried forcing the laptop to use the dedicated graphics from nvidia control panel, but the second I exit the panel and enter a game, it switches itself back to integrated graphics. I've tried disabling the CPU graphic unit from device manager but it did not work, the laptop was still using that one. Also I've unistalled and reinstalled all drivers. It's still changing to integrated.

Also I've noticed something that I think it's kinda wrong. I cannot upgrade the drivers to 337.88 but only to the beta drivers 340.43, the only nvidia drivers working before this beta one being the 332.33 I've downloaded from Asus's website. Anyway, I've installed the 340.43 beta driver and my games are still not using the dedicated GPU.
Do you guys have any solutions for this problem?

Here are the specs, but I think you already know them:

CPU: I7 4700HQ
GPU: Nvidia GTX 760m
RAM: 8 GB RAM
HDD: 500 gb space
OS: Windows 8.1 FPP 64 bit

Any help is appreciated 🙂

Anything?

DarkRaVenRO, I was also feeling frustrated just like you and decided to try to install the latest NVidia drivers using alternative methods and it worked perfectly, plus I don't have any more issues with my game play anymore! I have posted some of this on the following blog: http://aliencountry.wordpress.com/2014/09/21/nvidia-geforce-drivers-on-g56jr-notebook-a-quick-guide/

Hope you find that useful. 🙂

RyanS, external sites disappear over time, we have had several instances here in the forums already of links/downloads disappearing. You are welcome to post the text/images here directly.

DarkRaVenRO, a couple of Nvidia updates have been available since 340.43 BETA: 340.52 and 344.11. Did you try either of those - I would just jump to 344.11 now that it is out.

There are some programs that won't run on the Nvidia GPU even if the Nvidia Discrete Card / High Performance is set globally in the Nvidia Control panel 3D settings, or even if you set the Program directly in the Nvidia Control Panel 3D Program Settings tab.

There are workarounds for programs that aren't compatible with Optimus, you can google for those directly using the game/program name and Optimus or Nvidia Inspector and see if someone has worked up a profile that gets the app/game to recognize the Nvidia card.

What games/apps aren't switching to the Nvidia GPU?
