G55VW Keyboard backlight issue

I purchased my G55vw yesterday and everything was working fine when tested at the store. However, today I came to realize that some of my buttons are pretty dimmed compared to others (numpad section is working fine). Is this a common bug that can be fixed? any help I can get would be great.

Thank you.

My apologies if my first statement wasnt clear. Basically a g55 comes with a keyboard that has a backlight. My issue is that some of my keys on the keyboard are not bright enough. The right side of my keyboard (numpad side) is bright whereas the rest of the keys are not. Again I apologize for delivering an unclear statement. I sincerely hope you can assist me kind sir.

Try to update your BIOS, and the ATK package 🙂

Mike_Lu@ASUS : yup basically on my right side of the keyboard it's still bright so its working fine. On my left side it has light on but it's rather dark.

Sing_css : Interesting point. I've googled elsewhere and many have pointed out that the error might come from BIOS. I must admit, I'm fairly new to this whole gaming laptop and I'm not particularly very knowledgeable when it comes to pc settings (be it hardware or software). I guess I'll try to learn where I can about BIOS.

Thank you for your kind replies everyone.

hi @Bellic, the reason i asked for a picture was that the keyboard light looks 'different' when you view it with different angles.

for instance, the area where keys like 'o, p, k, l' are populated looks more dim than the rest of the keyboard when i sit properly; but there is nothing wrong with the light in that area when i check them out closely. if you thought the light under space bar looked weird (one-sided only; near the tiny running man icon), no, it's not. that is by design.

Rewben : Yup thanks for pointing that out and I understand what you are saying but I can assure you that this is a technical error. The keyboard lights were functioning well when I first got it from the store. Upon investigating, I've come to two conclusions : option 1 is to have a look into BIOS and try to update it if possible. Option 2 is to send it back to the store. Apparently the after sales service for Asus in my country is rather poor so I'm hoping option 1 would do the trick !

Your report of a half normal/half dimmed keyboard backlight is the first I've read for ANY G Series laptop.

If the keyboard backlights functioned normally when you first used the laptop, you should be able to use Windows System Restore to restore your system to a time before the backlight problem occurred to resolve the problem (if it is software-related - a corruption of the ATK Package driver that controls the F3/F4 keys).

However, It sure sounds like a hardware issue, so your troubleshooting with the BIOS is something I would try if I were in your situation. See http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?28581-G74sx-problem-with-Intel-Centrino-Ultimate-N-633ANHMW... for a quick intro to BIOS flashing. You could first try restoring BIOS defaults for your current BIOS before any upgrades.

dstrakele : Thank you so much for that! - really needed some understanding with BIOS and how to work it out. Your first suggestion is also interesting and I might just give it a go since ATK as pointed out, might also be the problem.

I'm not computer savvy so I'm hoping I won't screw this system up! I'll probably read a few more stuff on it just to be sure.

Thanks for the help - appreciate it ! 😄
