G55/75 Atheros Wifi Card - How Good is it?

Hi guys - I just got my G55VW-DS71 after having to deal with a defective Sager NP9130 that I couldn't get a replacement for in time. I set my Sager up with the best wireless possible, which came in the form of the Bigfoot Networks Killer 1103 Wireless-N card with 3 antennae. Now I've read that the wireless card in this Asus laptop is only a single antenna? How is it when it comes to wireless transfer speeds on paper?

Is this card quite budget compared to the rest of the laptop setup? If so, is there anything I can do to improve my wireless performance? Would a dual-band USB adapter handle things better?

Thanks for your input in advance!

Simple way to go, USB WiFi Dongle.

I have seen someone trying to replace Atheros with an Intel 3x antenna and there is a problem making the 3rd antenna work. I'm not sure if it's specific to Intel, Intel 6xxx+G75 or just G75.

Now I know that it's very easy to change the WiFi card (see my sig link), but it seems that this voids warranty. I would really like to know why.

its not great honestly , been having connection issues with my linkysys N router since day one , fixed a few things by updating to lastest drivers but is still causing latency issues and low speed perfomance.

Thanks for your responses, I'll probably jump on a USB Wifi adapter as you noted... Looking at the ASUS Black Diamond Dual-Band USB Adapter. Think that'll do the trick? I see it on Amazon for $36.99. Sound like a good deal?

I don't know exactly what kind of performance you're looking for, but I've been extremely pleased with the wireless performance of my G75. Rare is the time when my download speed dips below 2.2Mbps, and I haven't had any troubles connecting or staying connected to any networks.

Well, I jumped on the dual-band ASUS usb adapter since I simply need good range and speeds when I'm at my campus next month. I'd like to get some good outside usage without the walls or range getting in the way. At least this thing'll help a bit.

Card gets good range, speed and i never had any issues with it.

Is it weird that I got my G55vw replaced, and the new one doesn't have an ATHEROS but instead an INTEL wifi card?

No. Retailers can ask for Intel as well if they want. At least that is the situation here, but most just don't.

I am going to be transplanting the wifi card from my dell to this laptop. I have the Intel ultimate 6300 blah blah blah in that one and after testing both, I agree the atheros card is pretty dodgy.

I get slightly better speeds out of the intel card and I don't get any lag while browsing, etc... And both machines have identical tunings.

I would get an Intel ultimate-N card and call it done.
