G53SW laptop fan always running, video card and processors always hot

Hi,

I've had my G53SW laptop for about half a year now and for the past few weeks I have noticed the fans always running. I downloaded the SpeedFan program to see the temperatures of the inside components and my video card and processors are constantly at a moderately hot 55 degrees C at all times the laptop is powered on.

Up until now it would never get hot enough to have the fans running unless I was playing a computer game but now they are constantly wizzing away. Games that I could play before without any problems now make the laptop get HOT and slowdown and the videocard gets all the way up to the 90s with the fans on full blast the entire time I try to play.

I have tried shooting compressed air into the fan vents in the back but that hasn't seemed to make a difference. I do not have any viruses or spyware that I know of and have ran AdAware, Spybot, and CCleaner scans. I have "optimized" my computer using Advanced System Care.

Does this just happen with age? And will it continue to deteriorate? I think I'd expect this happening after a few years but months out of the box seems too soon.

I do not mess with any overclocking at all.

Has anyone experienced this as well or have any suggestions on what I should do to try and fix it?

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: I also have not installed any new drivers for months

I would say disassemble the notebook and really clean out the fans. If you smoke or have pets, they will plug the fans up in a hurry. The ROG notebooks do not tend to collect tabletop dust since their air intakes are on the top of the computer, not the bottom. That "speaker" grill right under the display is partly speaker grill, and partly air intake. The slots on the bottom panel also take in air, but that is mostly for cooling the RAM and the HDD. The primary CPU/GPU cooling comes from the top of the computer--great work ASUS! 🙂

This design tends to reduce the acquisition of ambient dust, but pets release a load of dander, and the tar and smoke from tobacco really sticks to computer fans, I'm told. Those are the only two sources of serious cooling problems that I can think of. The temperature at which your GPU is running at idle is by no means dangerous. Mine sits at idle at 45 C, and runs up to 55 C under load. Those 90 C load temperatures are a cause for concern. The final, and worst alternative is that the thermal interface grease has failed, which requires either return for repair or a lengthy disassembly of the notebook that voids the warranty.

Thanks that was a really fast reply!

Unfortunately for me I do not smoke or have pets - how would I tell if the thermal interface grease has failed and what causes this to happen?

Before I panic though I will definitely try opening it up to clean the fans more thoroughly but when I googled "disassemble g53sw" they all seeem to be the "lengthy" disassembly that you were talking about (to me anyways :p) where the computer is completely taken apart. Is there a way to just get to the fans?

Correction: fortunately for you that you do not smoke. 🙂

There is no easy way to disassemble the computer, trust me. I've done it. The grease has likely not failed, or your computer would hit 90 C under even a slight load. The greater likelihood is that there is dust on the fans, and blowing in through the grill will not help, it will simply push the dust back into the fans, which is worse. You may have to disassemble your computer in order to clean it. That is one of the advantages of the G55, the fan are pretty easily accessible. Before you attempt disassembly, try installing the latest nVidia drives and BIOS (if you haven't already) to see if they adjust the fan load ramp.

Finally got around to taking it apart for a good cleaning and it has helped a lot. My computer now runs without needing the fans on when idle but my video card still gets up to the high 80s when doing something graphically demanding. Will that damage it over time?

I really appreciate your help man thank you 😄

And yeah I am glad I don't smoke lol

Glad to hear that. The GTX 460M is not as power efficient as the 560M, so you will run a little hotter than I do. The 80 C spikes are not a problem, that is because you have a 75 W video card. When you run games, what is the average temperature? Is it the 80 C you mentioned, or is that the peak?

It averages from 83-86 I'd say.

Most agree the occasional 90 degree temp is nothing to be worried about. If it hits 3 digit temps ( 100+ ) consistently it is time to worry.
