g53 runs too hot

Hi,

I wanted to run 3d mark vantage today when my g53 sw shut itself during the 3rd test. I just wanted to ask whether that's normal or not. Some people seem to be able to finish the benchmark successfully..
Also I was wondering if my gpu temps are ok, on idle it's around 53C which seems very high.
My fan (the one on the right, i think its the gpu one) seems to be spinning all the time, even if I'm not doing anything and my Power setting is on Power saver. Everyone says this laptop is so quiet, but it's really not (at least the one i have)

How old is your notebook, have you ever cleaned your fans after purchase ?

I performed to clean my fans today and removed a lot of dust after 8 months in use.... and I can see that my temp went 7-8 celcius down (33-34 at normal usage reported by SIW) 🙂
And is usually was on 40 celcious and more.

EDIT: Which graphic driver version do you have installed on your notebook?

Ive had it for 5 months now, but the temps have always been that high. Also I had to rma it and it received a new gpu+ mainboard. Is it possible that they screwed something up or didnt paste correctly? Its so damn hard to open this thing and Ive never managed to get to the gpu (you even have to take off the display if I remember correctly). It might seem stupid, but how do I clean the vents?

40C seems like a dream for me, what model do you have? Are your fans spinning all the time, or are there moments when they completely stop (like on every normal laptop)?

In my first post I wrote that it idles around 53 but I think its more around 48, but thats still hot. I wanted to use gpu tweak to put my fans on maximum spin, to see by how much that would lower the temperature, but the program doesnt display the fan speed 😞

Hmm.... everything is possible but I daubt that it's bad paste..... if it is a bad paste then I would think about that as the last option to think about.

I have a G73SW-3DE, owned it for 8 months I think.....
To disassemble my notebook I had to remove the screen as well but it wasnt hard. Only be careful when you do the disassembly so you don't ruin anything..... and also be sure to not remove any lables with "warranty voided if removed"

Go to this thread http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?5224-Drivers-Apps-and-How-to-s&country=&status= and look for HWinfo64. That program can read the fan speed 🙂

A hint for the disassembly, if you want to remember which screw fits each hole, place them in a pattern, then it will be easier for you when you put it together again 🙂

Hey thx for your help so far.
I will try clear the vents some day but I first need to buy some canned air. So I'm not sure yet when I'll be able to do it.
I ran HWinfo and surprising thing it only shows one fan called Gpu Fan which runs at 100% all the time no matter what power mode I'm in. So 2 questions: 1. is the second fan just a dummy or why is it not showing?
2. Is it a reading error, or is the fan actually running at full speed all the time? Why?

Also, when I put the pc under load I can hear the fans spinning notably faster, so where does that come from, if its on 100% already?

Oh and before I forget, 3. question: Is it not possible to change the fan speed manually on g53's? Ive tried gpu tweak and speed fan and none offer me to change the speed

How come that you can read 100% fan speed?


This is how I can see mine:
GPU: 2188 RPM
CPU: 2747 RPM

I don't think it's possible in these notebooks to change the fan speed. It works automatically when the GPU/CPU needs to cool down.

If you want to see pics on how I removed the dust, then I can upload one, so yeah it's good tool to have the compressed air aswell when you're going to clean it 🙂

The second fan is no dummy, it should show up as in my pic here/ get readings from it.

It could be a lot of dust in the machine, if that is why it's running at 100% all the time but I can not tell you that for sure.

It doesn't give the fan speeds, just says gpu fan 100%.
Speedfan only detects a cpu fan which is running at 2400 rpm.

How could it possibly have accumulated so much dust in such a short time?

Hmm.... it also says that mine has 100% but that could be some other info.... not so good with HWinfo64 😛

But it's weird that you don't get the GPU/CPU fan speed up :S

If you live in a place with dogs/cats or other animals then that can be a source for much dust/hair or it can be much dust in the air. And if the notebook is on 24/7 then the gathering of the dust will accumulate much faster.

EDIT:

Here I'm testing that the fans sounds normal, I noticed that I didn't place the metal thingy right on both fans (made a lot of vibrations sound) so I had to take them up again and then put it back on it's place (the attachments for it wasn't on it's place)

Hey,
Today i cleaned the vents and i was quite disappointed to see that there was almost no dust there. After putting it together again, I checked my temps and they are still the same 😞
When I start the laptop they are at 36C but then quickly rise to around 48C. Also today I installed the newest gpu driver, but no change from there either.

Maybe some other g53 owners with the 460m could tell me what idle temps they are getting and how quiet there machine is running. As I said my fan is constantly making noise which is a bit annoying.

Any other ideas what it could be? Does asus not have some official data about the temps?

Hmm, then you are living in a very clean place hehe 🙂

Was the disassembly as hard as you thought it was or easier? 🙂

Anyway I hope you get the issue fixed, I know that the loud fan noise is very annoying and you know that the machine have a pretty good cooling system.
