G501JW Screen problem after wake from standby - halo, solved with 209 or later bios?

Dear all,

I bought my G501JW a couple of weeks ago. Everything all right so far, but today... I had it on playing some music with VLC, I was in a different room. Then I got back to the laptop and I immediately noticed a halo on the screen. It's close to the borders of it, and if I take a screenshot and I look at it in the unaffected part of the screen, everything seems normal. So it doesn't seem like a software problem, but a hardware one, I suspect. :--(

Anybody has experienced anything similar? WHat should I do?

Thank you for your help.

The problem still has not returned, so I'm inclined to say that the bios fixed this issue for me.

Thanks for the suggestion cl-Albert.

Yes it's a hardware problem, the display panel isn't well shielded (I think).
If the unit is still new then apply for an RMA and get Asus to fix the defect.

Thanks again for the update Zinterax, and glad to hear it's still working okay so far.

Thanks for the suggestion Korth, but the link provided in your post appears to be for a different issue related to the ROG logo on the G750JX model, so G501JW owners may want to consider trying the 209 or later bios to see if it helps with the problem they see with the screen after waking up from standby.

If you're interested, check the pictures posted by Zinterax earlier at this thread under post #6 to compare.

Almost ten days since the BIOS update and the halo hasn't returned yet (despite waking up the screen from being idle several times). Maybe the update really solved the problem! 🙂

Edit by cl-Albert: Thanks for the feedback SamSimon and glad to hear the unit is working better!

I just want to add that I also successfully installed the BIOS update and the halo hasn't returned in 3 months. However, prior to the BIOS update I had upgraded my windows from Home to Professional and enabled bitlocker. After the BIOS update, bitlocker noticed a hardware change and locked me out. I had to use a Macrium Reflect image to restore my hard drive. Please beware!
