G46VW - Audio missing after installing LAME

Hi there,

I made the mistake of installing Lame v3.99.3 on Windows 8, and low and behold, the audio drivers disappeared after a reboot. ( I am used to Ubuntu so this caught be by surprise ; I shall have to get used to these things happening.. From now onwards I shall create SystemRestore points before I install any software, or make any changes.).

I tried to reinstall the drivers from Asus ( http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/G46VW/#support_Download_36 VIA Audio Version V6.0.10.1200 ) but it failed to even run the SETUP.EXE.

Is there another method or site I can use to get the sound back?


I apologise: I know that this is a Windows and VIA related question, but I see little point in telephoning either VIA or Microsoft for support, so thought I'd see if anyone else happened to know how to get out of this.

Summary:
No audio subsystem is available on my Win8 G46VW.
VIA Audio drivers from Asus site won't install. Error message : InstallShield, 1628: Failed to complete installation.

I solved the problem. The VIA Audio install would continue soon as I uninstalled LAME.

Sadly the problem came backfrom the dead.

One reboot later and the VIA audio has been removed.

So, I can:

1) Install the VIA drivers from Asus site.
2) Audio is back.
3) Reboot
4) Audio is gone.
5) Install the VIA drivers from Asus site.
6)Audio is back
7) Reboot
😎 Audio is gone.
9) ....
...
and so on.

Anyone know how to escape this?

Check and make sure the audio device is not being disabled in device manager. Look in audio and system in device manager.


If it isn't being disabled you can try to restore to last known good configuration if you have it turned on.
Hit F8 during reboot and pick a last known good configuration. Look at the date and pick one that is prior to you installing lame. Backup any important data prior to doing this. Anything you installed after the last know good configuration date will be gone.

The audio device is simply unlisted in the Device Manager. No audio subsystems were listed.

However, there were some MS patches to be installed, so I installed these, rebooted, and the audio was back. Weird.

I shall test tonight ( am in work now ) and then see what F8 produces. However I imagine that the 'last known good config.,' includes the uninstalled audio drivers because just because drivers are not installed, does not indicate a problem.

Thought I should update this thread.
After a reboot the audio is detected, yet upon resume from shutdown the audio is not detected. I know that Windows 8 does notreally shutdown the notebook any more in order to enable some sort of fast boot.

Is there a way to disable this and have it shutdown properly?

This way I could see if there is causality, and work from there.

Describes way to disable fast boot and hibernation. Also provides solutions to full shutdown without disabling hibernation.

Hi there,

It has been some time since I updated this thread: I've been trying to work out where this problem lies. A complete Restart usually brought back the audio devices, but sadly this no longer happens and a Restart sometimes shows the hardware, and sometimes does not. A boot from a Shutdown never does.

I am at a loss. I cannot fathom why the hardware is there sometimes or absent. I thought perhaps faulty wiring, yet if this were then this should cause problems when this is moved, but the problem comes and goes when this notebook is not moved.

Does anyone else have a similar problem with audio on the VW46 with the VIA sound chip?

I found it in Control Panel -> Power Options -> Choose what power buttons do -> Change settings that are currently unavailable (at the top because otherwise everything is grayed out) -> Turn on fast startup.
