[FIXED] So, uh... my trackpad died.

Hello boys, girls, and strange beings.

While using my G74Sx-TH1 just a couple of minutes ago I turned off the trackpad (using the Fn + F9 shortcut) to use Google Reader using keyboard shortcuts, like I always do. When I decided to use the trackpad again, I turned it on... and nothing. Trackpad still doesn't work, even after rebooting.

Anyone have any idea what the clock is going on?

Greetings, fellow strange bean!

Can you work your way into Winodws System Restore and restore your system to a time when the touchpad functioned?

If not, can you get into "Control Panel - Uninstall a program" and uninstall "Finger Sensing Pad Driver" or "ATK Package"? Does that revive your TP?

If you have to try the uninstall driver gambit, be sure to reboot to allow Windows 7 to install its Plug N Play touchpad driver.

Hello dstrakele, thanks for your reply.

I did Windows System Restore to the latest restore; today midday. Didn't work.

Tried ATK Package. Rebooted, Windows asked for ATK drivers, said it couldn't load kernel, blah-de-blah. Expected. Reinstalled, didn't work.

Gonna try Finger Sensing Pad Driver now. I hope that one works!

[Edit]
Nope, nothing! Keep recommending, I'm sure something might work.

[Edit 2]
Wait, hold on. The trackpad is sensing movement. Thing is that it's going nuts and doesn't let the pointer move more than 100 pixels away from the taskbar.

[Edit 3]
A couple of quick reboots later (man, you gotta love SSDs) and I can confirm the trackpad is working fully again.

Thank you!!

For troubleshooting purposes, you could boot into ASUS Express Gate Cloud (if you still have the stock ASUS Factory Windows 7) by pressing the ROG buttion to power on, and see if the mouse works there. Express Gate is a BIOS extension, so if the mouse doesn't work there, it'll be unlikely uninstalling the touchpad driver in Windows will help. But if it DOES work, you'll know it is not a hardware problem.

Do you have any devices plugged into the USB ports?

Are you getting any Errors or Warnings in the Windows System Event Log?

Glad to read you got it working again. But if this is a new system and the touchpad dies again, or the cursor starts moving erratically during normal use, consider contacting your retailer to see if you can still exchange it for a new system or return it for a refund.

Perhaps I'm in the minority here but I feel trackpads don't belong on a gaming laptop. I don't like them on any laptop for that matter although I can understand the need for one in a tight spot such as an airplane seat or something. I keep my touchpads perma-disabled.

first, i do think you are in the minority. second, gaming machines aren't just for gamers. a lot of people, including myself, buy gaming machines as desktop replacements. i want as much power and speed as i can get, and the gaming machines are usually the best choice. so making a laptop without a trackpad, would be an idiotic move, in my opinion. however, i do feel that there should always be a button to enable or disable it. relying on software is moronic, when we have had these buttons on laptops for years and years now. ...and they work flawlessly! asus made several mistakes on this machine, and that is just one of them.

The trackad is being all... jumpy. It's not working right currently. Who would go with a software solution and not a hardware solution for the trackpad?

Well, if it's a software (driver) issue you are experiencing, I would go with a software solution.

If, on the other hand, your touchpad has a failed ground and it's damaged, there is no software solution. So trying those kinds of fixes won't get you anywhere.

If you are experiencing this issue, the best thing you can do is try to diagnose which problem you have....software or hardware. There are certainly driver snafus that can mimic the erratic behavior of a failed-ground situation, so it's important to take some time to make sure before sending it in for RMA.
