First Impressions G701VI

So, it appears that ASUS is releasing a new laptop that features the GTX1080. This laptop is somewhat of an odd release. It appears to be thinner than the G752VS that was released just two weeks ago, also claims to have overclock ability and has the 1080. It is a little more expensive with the lowest base model I could find starting at $3,099 but it also has a 120hz G-sync panel. No word yet if its IPS or a TN panel, I'm hoping they are finally switch to IPS. I'm fairly concerned that I don't see any speakers so not sure if the audio will be any better than the G75X series. It also has that Titanium and Copper look that its fairly ugly but over all looks slightly better than the G752. Lastly on ExcaliberPC it show its wider than the G752 but when you look at xoticPC their dimensions if accurate make it much more wide to a point of why.... There are also two different weights being listed, with one site showing 7.9lb and another showing almost 13lb. Without an official spec sheet from ASUS yet its impossible to say who it right. At least with its specs it puts a good choice up against MSI's new laptops coming out but stating at $3,099 vs MSI starting price of $2,799 it will be interesting to see if the G-Sync will tempt people to spend that extra $300 right off the bat.

So, I just noticed that this laptop is M.2 only. It comes with an upgradeable 512GB, does not say if it has extra M.2 slots, but no 2.5in bay.

2 M2 Slots, no HDD bay, no DVD/CD to removeand put an adapter for an HDD, only SSD.

I think that is going to be the trend, were not using the CD/DVD drives for anything anymore. USB key is far better for any software installs. USB 3.0 External drives are now just as fast as internal spinners. Just my observations

It'll be nice to keep the HDD bay_ having the ability to install a 2TB HDD would be wonderful for storage reasons. Video games takes loads of space these days. any sort of m.2 ssd's are still pretty pricey if your reaching the 1TB + versions.

So I bought the G701VI ; with a 6700HQ processor,
16 gigs of ram and 1 Nvme disk of 512gb
I have to say it's a great machine, very well built, slim (if you don't count the power adapter)

for now, it's working great, I have tried many games on it and really, nothing seems to bring it to it's knees,
I mean every game I tested runs in ultra at more (or almost) than 100 fps

The major drawbacks of this machine in my opinion is the lack of disk space (a hard disk drive should have been inserted in it - even Asus does it on some model so why not on this? ) yes they will say you can go up to 2Tb with a ssd Raid but, it would cost half the price of the machine of not more.
The second problem lies in its conception, sure it's thin, that makes it classy but, then the temps are not great when playing, I have had a lot of Asus G's (G73, G75, G750, G751, G752) and i liked them because even in game they run cool, except for this one, 93°c degrees for the CPU in game, 87°c degrees for the GTX 1080; that's hot ! My previous Rig was the G752VY, even after 3hours of gaming, the beast temps were 65°c for the processor and barely 70 for the GTX980m; In short, maybe it should have been bulkier/larger for better heat dissipation.

So that's it, it's a great gaming rig, I do like it, fast as possible, nice design even if it means hotter (for the record I use a notebook cooler which helps a lot)
but very expensive.

I also have the same laptop and as much as I love it, I believe ASUS would have put at least one drive bay to install a hard drive.

Nonetheless, I have connected a Samsung 950 Pro 1TB and a Samsung 950 Pro 512GB to the Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C ports respectively..these are very fast ports so work the same if not better than any internal SSD drive.

By the way, when you pc starts, in the ROG gaming center, is the overclock always set in extreme ?
