DVD Drive not working (no Upper or Lower filters)

Hi,

Yesterday I wanted to burn DVD with Nero 10 and my drive stopped to recognise discs. I have Alcohol 52% and virtual drive installed (probably this caused the problem, but idk how to resolve it).

I tried every solution from this thread, but nothing worked.

I removed UpperFilter (I didnt had any LowerFilters) but it didn't resolved problem. I even removed Duplex Secure SPTD, but It didn't change anything so I restored my Windows to state before "drive accident". This ofc didn't resolved the problem, but now I have the UpperFilter back.

Given what you have tried, the one thing left to try before declaring the drive dead would be to get a bootable CD/DVD and see if you can boot from it. If yes, you have a software issue, if no, you need a new optical drive.

What kind of bootable CD/DVD? Windows 7 would be fine?


[EDIT]: I tried with Windows Recovery CD and Windows 7 Ultimate OEM and none of these worked.

But I don't understand how it's even possible to break DVD drive with simple copying DVD discs in Nero. You must be joking. I have ASUS G74SX since December 2011 and I used DVD drive 8-9 times. It's impossible, that drive broke after 10(?) time. I had Toshiba A200-1IZ and DVD drive worked perfectly for 5 years. Now I'm buying hi-end laptop and DVD drive is dead after epic work in Nero?! 😞

@cl-scott, does ASUS even make its own DVD drives? A lot of vendors buy from the same DVD drive OEM. so the bad apples are spread around. Still, glad to see ASUS taking care of it! 🙂

Despite what you may think, I know what it's like to have this sort of thing happen, and I know it's not fun when it happens to you. All I can really tell you is that this is an uncommon occurrence, but it is far from unheard of. Asus, Apple, Acer, HP, Dell, Toshiba... Name a manufacturer, and you can find people who have had this exact same problem. When I worked as an Apple repair tech, I had units coming across my workbench that were fresh from the factory where the optical drive was bad.

The good news is that this is a valid RMA issue, and if you bought your unit in Dec 2011, it should still be under warranty, so you can get this fixed on our dime.

Did you try removing the ODD and reseating its connection?

You could also test the drive while removed by installing it to another computer, even a desktop system.

An often overlooked problem is simply dust on the lens - I've brought several "dead" notebook optical drives back to life just by using one of those cleaner discs with brushes on them. It's worth a try 😛
