Does the G750 series use Optimus?

Hi -

Looking to move up from my trusty old G72GX, and was wondering if the G750 Series have Optimus Technology? I frequently boot linux, and Optimus isn't well supported, and was hoping the G750 didn't use Optimus technology.

No, G series does not use Optimus and it should not. It's buggy.

There is debate about this move on ASUS' part, but I would tend to agree with the side of not. The 780M is such a powerful card that hindering its performance (which Optimus, by its design, does) would be a bad plan. I could see the purpose of improving battery life on slower graphics cards, where the user is more likely to be moving around, but not a computer that powerful.

No the g750 series does not use Optimus. It is because the screen is directly connected to the nvidia GPU. Optimus is only available when the screen is connected to the processor's GPU. Whether this was a smart move on asus's part is being hotly debated.

Perfect - I am glad to hear that Asus didn't do Optimus on these machines, I agree its buggy and hinders performance (and compatibility with alternative OS's). I seems that most manufacturers have adopted optimus

You are welcome. I agree about the issue of supporting Optimus under other OS's. Specifically, that is why I bought the ASUS that I did. I didn't want a system that wouldn't properly support LINUX. The Sony laptop I had been looking at was Optimus, and so it wouldn't likely work as well - not to mention Sony + LINUX = bad combination.

My friend and I could not find the adaptive vsync in the nvidia control panel (his Msi GT70) We just left vsync on and it felt like adaptive. I tried vsync with no adaptive on mine and it felt worse.

He did have the intel selections when right clicking desktop which I didn't have.

ah.. this is good news 😄

the keywords are 'gaming laptop'. whatever intel wanna go for better intel built-in graphics, better battery life and all are conflicting with a gaming laptop, like g-series (especially the 17"s).

if you really need optimus, there are better options imo.
