Display Driver Error

Retired

Hey everyone,

I purchased my G74SX-A1 about a month and a half ago with no serious problems aside from the fluky track pad. I read the fix for this online here and am decided that I'm just willing to live with it.

But there is a problem that's cropped up that I can't live with and although not specific to this laptop since I did purchase a G74 I thought I'd post my problem here in hopes that one of you could help me out.

I've just started to get a windows display driver error, the screen blacks out and a few seconds later reappears with an error message telling me that Windows recovered from the error. I've searched for the error online and there are many people that have it but no one seems to have a concrete solution. Some people mention updating display drivers, others mention editing the Windows registry, some recommend flashing the BIOS.

So before I start plugging away at a million different fixes (some of which don't work) I thought I'd ask here. I am using Windows 7 Home 64 bit, however I had an older laptop that used Windows 7 professional 64 bit and the same thing started happening (different laptop manufacturer). Thanks in advance for your help

Start by getting the latest Verde driver for your graphics. It's possible you may still have an issue but I have not read of anyone having this problem with the latest driver.

i updated the display driver but still have the same problem as @someguy. any other ideas?

What version did you update to? G74SX's need either the driver from the ASUS site, which isn't exactly an update since it's as old as Methuselah or you need to use a driver with a modified INF (install script). The Verde 280.26 WHQL ModINF in Chastity's driver thread is good, or you can go to LapTopVideo2Go and get something more current.

ALSO it might be a good idea if you used DriverSweeper, also linked in Chastity's thread, to clean up the nVidia drivers between uninstalling the old and installing the new. Read everything you can before doing this!!!!

Does this happen when running any particular program?

Good luck. Hope you solve your problem. Let us know. 😉
Read the User's Manual for more info. 😄
