Difference betwen G551 and G501?

New to this site so this may be a noob question but the ASUS website lists very few differences between the two main models.

Where I am I have the choice of a G551JW-CN043H and a G501JW-CN047H but on paper they appear almost identical.

G501JW-CN047H G551JW-CN043H
CPU i7-4720HQ i7-4720HQ
RAM 8GB + 8GB DDR3L 16 GB DDR3L
Display 15.6 inch Ful HD 15.6 inch (1920x1080) Full HD
Graphics GTX960 GDDR5 4GB GTX 960M (4GB GDDR5)
HDD 1 TB 7200 rpm + 128 GB SSD 1 TB 7200 RPM
Webcam Mega Pixel Fixed web camera Full HD Webcam

I can see that the G501 is slimmer. So is the difference something to do with the cooling?

What is the difference between a "Mega Pixel" webcam and a "Full HD Webcam"? I can't find the specs for either.

The price difference is only $30 but I want to make sure I get the model which is more suited to my needs. I work away from home and use my laptop all day and night. I use it for work, surfing the net, watching movies and TV and playing games. So I need it to be cool and silent.

Any advice greatly received. Thanks in advance.

Hi, did you resolve this issue?
I am in the same situation as you were.
Please, let me know if you have additional information about G501 or G551, which one to take...
Thanks

Yes, I resolved this issue by buying neither the G501 or the G551.

A few things put me off of both of them, such as;

- The GTX960M graphics card which is woefully underspec'd for a decent gaming experience. Originally I thought it was a 965M but even that is very lackluster and I don't think that is available on the UK models.
- The G501 is an Ultrabook therefore it has very little ventilation and gets hot when using the GPU
- The power button is where the DELETE key is on most other laptops and I know I would be frequently putting my laptop to sleep by accident.

I found that the Gigabyte P35W was a much better machine all round for similar money but in the end I decided I would build a Vortex IV 15" laptop with PCSpecialist in the UK, something which I still haven't done yet. I was waiting for a bit of a price drop but in the last few months the price has increased and now they no longer seem to offer a 980M GPU as an option.

So I'm gonna keep on waiting...

If you could Build Your OWN Laptop in your country That would be Great
Lucky You. That not to say Asus ROG Series are not great , G751 Are amazing to be honest.
But If where I live they would let me build my own laptop I would have done it rather than buying g751.

But we are taking about a 15" laptop, not the 17" laptops that ASUS make. And yes you are right, the 17" ROG laptops are really good. The 15" ASUS laptops not so much.
