Hello,

Is it possible to delete the built-in OS in a G750JM?

I am asking since i once bought a Packard Bell that had a chip on the Motherboard that locked the computer the second i formatted it, and required a Packard Bell OS image to unlock it.

zawarudio, it's a good idea to back up the OS, and recovery image that the laptop came with. The recovery partition is the equivalent of the restore/recovery DVD's that used to get shipped with computers. Once it is gone, you have to send the laptop back to Asus to get it restored.

You can back up the recovery partition with Asus Backtracker to a 16GB USB 3.0 flash drive, and you can boot on that drive to restore the OS and both internal disks back to the out of the box config - the restored drive will also have a recovery partition.

Since disks are so check these days, I would suggest making the Asus Backtracker 16GB USB 3.0 flash drive backup, but also to replace the 2.5" drive and set it on the shelf as a backup. Use a new HDD or SSD and restore to it for a new boot.

You can load other operating systems, multi-boot, and Microsoft installs should use the BIOS Windows key, in a JM it is for Windows 8.1.

Again, you may not think you want to preserve the OEM Windows 8.1 install, but it is all you have from Asus to do a restore/recovery.

BTW, the only Asus "bloatware" worth uninstalling is the Asus Splendid, Asus Power4Gear, Asus Live, Asus Gaming Mouse - the rest is small and innocuous.

It only takes 5 minutes to remove the bloatware, it takes hours to make the Microsoft Windows from scratch install - gathering the drivers / software - and doing the updates, and there is no performance difference in the end. It's not worth it.

What OS are you thinking of installing?

Thanks for the answer.
I am thinking of installing both Windows 7 and a working Linux distro (didn't really check the drivers, so can't tell which one yet, but looking into Gentoo or ArchLinux)
The reason is, i find Windows 8 to be pure cancer. And this is said with alot of VM experience
I am fine being forced to format if everything goes to sh*t, and having nothing to recover since critical datas will be duplicated.

Are the HDD shaky on this model?

zawarudio, the HDD's seem good once they pass the first few weeks of infant mortality. A few owners have come to the forum with drive problems that get RMA'd, but not many.

The Windows drivers and function are the critical things to preserve 🙂

Asus has put up Windows 7 drivers for some things, but Asus Tweak Tool for Laptops isn't offered for Windows 7, and the Windows 8.1 version doesn't work. Nor do the Windows 7 versions of Asus Tweak Tool for Graphics cards work on the JM/JS/JZ

Under Windows 7 you won't have full fan function, that is only available with Asus Tweak Tool for Laptops under Windows 8.1

Others have complained about no fan increase for load/temperature increase under Windows 7 as well on the JM/JS/JZ.

hmscott, did you just say that if you delete the recovery partition, or simply just format the entire drive and install a fresh Win8, the unit will BRICK..?

Oh thank goodness, because I'm soon to format. Overdue by 6 months.

Tried to make a bootable Win7 USB Key, BIOS didn't recognise it.
Tried to make a 100Gb Partition with W7 installed from booted W8.1, bugged.

Now, the thing i want to know. Am i cursed, or motherboard really is chip-locked?

zawarudio, please do some searching in the forum, and googling on the internet, for how to install Windows 7 on a G750 or UEFI BIOS laptop.

Hi zawarudio, if you can enter the bios do these three things first.

1. Switch to "Boot Tab" and set “Launch CSM” to Enabled
2. Switch to "Security Tab" and set "Secure Boot Control" to Disabled.
3. Press F10 to save and exit.

Then try to install Win7 with you install media, you should now be able to install my friend.
