Computer won't totally shut down

Was using my G751JT CH71 on battery and went to shut it down using windows and it only partially shut down. I have a blank screen with only mouse pointer that moves around and power button lit. Screen slightly lights up when you move mouse. It just won't completely shut down. Even tried holding power button down and no luck. Keys dont light up either. Computer only 5 days old. Sometimes I can get power button off but power light keeps flashing. It just wont shut off. Would like to pull battery but dont known where battery is. Any ideas what happened?

rracres, this is going to sound strange, but a lot of people are reporting this problem. The laptop stops working unexpectedly, either on AC or on Battery.

Also reported is that people are noticing, while the laptop is still running ok, that when they unplug the AC adapter cable from their laptop to run on battery, and then plug that cable back in to the laptop later, the system tray tool shows that the battery sn't charging.

The only way to get it charging again is to unplug the other cable from the AC adapter, the one to the wall socket, and then plug it back in - resetting the AC adapter - then it starts charging again.

It seems the recent power adapters from Asus are going to sleep a short while after the laptop is disconnected from it.

Try unplugging your AC power cable from the wall socket, while the DC power cable from the power adapter is still plugged into your laptop, and then after a few seconds - plug the AC power cable back into the wall socket.

Look on your laptop to see if the battery charging light is now on. Then wait 10 minutes, and try to boot your laptop.

Yeah, I just shut mine off (same model) and I have pretty red lights on th keyboard and cannot start or turn off the damn thing, not sure what they were thinking having the battery non removable. It's pretty stupid.

Update: After battery died and laptop shut down it booted up this morning and is working well now. Must of been a Windows hiccup.

Good advice about drivers and bluetooth. Will check my updates tomorrow and see which one was the culprit. Thanks

Guys, although it is likely a different driver / update involved, there was a time with the G750 during the upgrade from Windows 8.0 to 8.1 that the Bluetooth drivers did this, kept the shutdown from happening, or taking a really long time. The solution then was to turn off Bluetooth, and/or uninstall the hardware specific Bluetooth driver - let the default Microsoft one's install and set any hardware specific Bluetooth drivers coming in through Microsoft update as Hidden so they wouldn't install.

Look for recent Windows Updates or your own recent driver updates / app installs to see which is causing this. I am assuming this just started happening recently, and it was shutting down ok before.

It's a good idea to set Windows Update to not automatically install updates, do it manually every week and review the updates before install - I usually Hide the driver updates and go and find the latest on my own at Asus or the OEM that makes the part.

Looks like update KB3000850 might of caused the problem. It was installed before I had the problem. It was an optional update

rracres, did you go to Programs and Features control panel, select View Installed Updates (on left side top of dialog) and uninstall the update then reboot to test? It might hang on reboot, but after next boot the shutdown would be normal, if that was the correct update to uninstall 🙂

I'm hesitant to do anything with the updates since the Laptop is working well again. Might try that later. Thanks

rracres, how are you going to shutdown every day? You can't let it run down the power till it dies, or use the Power Button to power off - if you do you should run the Disk check frequently. It is bad for the integrity of the Windows OS to power off mid running.

It won't hurt to uninstall the update. If it works you can look up the update and find which patch inside that roll-up of patches is at fault, and manually install all the other patches.

If it turns out you still have the problem, you can re-run Windows Update and it will find the KB missing and offer it for install again.

You can also do a System Restore Point right now, before uninstalling the Update, and then at boot use F8 to roll-back to that System Restore Point and be right back at your well working configuration.

But, it's right to not rush into something you aren't comfortable with, and for now you can sleep or hibernate to avoid Shutting down.

It looks like others have this problem, maybe someone else comfortable with the debugging will solve it. 🙂
