Brand New Asus Costumer. Bought G752. What can I expect?

Hello everyone. I am a future 3D animator and I have dealt with 'crap' computers for majority of my life. The last computer that I bought I though was going to be good enough for what I needed it for (Maya 3D, gaming on something other than low specs, etc.) And sadly, I was wrong. By the time I realized that I had purchased what I thought was a 'good' computer, the return date was far too late, and my mother was not willing to buy another, obviously. So I had to wait a few years... and that wait is over.

Friday I purchased the Asus ROG G752 (VT if I recall, it is the one that costs $1800) and it will arrive Wednesday morning. I already looked at a few reviews here and there, but I wanted to know from people who have been exposed to Asus for X amount of years:

What type of flaws can I expect from this laptop? What is the typical lifespan of one that is thoroughly taken care of? What can I expect to 'die' after a certain amount of years that might need replacing?

Just trying to get a general sense on what I am up against. I am really REALLY excited for this laptop and the things it is capable of.

If you are lucky, it will last more than you will ever need, perhaps 20+ years?

Battery - 3-5 years, depends on usage
CPU and GPU fan may need some lubrication after a few months (was the case with my g751jy)

What type of flaws can I expect from this laptop?

Check for dead pixels, if you find one - replace it.
Check for backlight bleed - either replace it or modify the screen bezel to put less pressure of the screen.
Heatsink compound may need to be replaced

All of the computers I've had in my life and none of my laptops have had dead pixels.... so I don't exactly know how to 'find' one. I'm pretty sure it would be very noticeable, though, so I will keep an eye out.

I just found out that (and this never happens, mind you) my package will be here 2 days earlier than expected. It should be in my arms within the next 3 hours. I'm so excited!

I'm expecting the CPU, GPU to give me problems after a few years, but I will probably keep my all-covered warranty with Best Buy indefinitely extended until I ever buy another computer. So that shouldn't be a problem in the long run.

I know the battery in this particular model doesn't even last that long, so I am not even worried about that going out. It will be plugged in majority of the time anyway (and because I am disabled physically, having a laptop is alot more convenient for me compared to having a desktop, because I can't take that to school with me, and the keyboards at my college kinda suck because of their overall use. Plus, the tables are too high for my arms, which is where I have the physical problem.)

As for the heatsink, idk if I will have to even touch that. This model comes with the vapor cooling, but I will keep the compound in mind.

And the bleeding, my current laptop has that in the bottom left and right corners, but it is only noticeable on a completely black screen (POST screen, for example.) And it never seems to be a problem for the 'few' games it can actually run.

I'll let you know if I run into any particular problems. ^_^

Expect very good quality hardware with sub-par customer support and software solutions - but that's not anything new and certainly not enough to dissuade me from ASUS' machines, we're running 3rd ASUS laptop in my house. (The newest one being a G751JY.)

These machines will last quite a bit considering their spot on the market. However, this trend might quickly change - this is the second generation with 980M graphics and those will be out the door pretty soon, so be wary of that - desktop and laptop GPUs are becoming closer in performance as of late and the next 1-2 generations may see that line blur even further.

Either way, it should perform well and long. They're usually built to last, my old N61Jy still works just fine after more than 4 years use except the hinges would break every year even without any stress put on them. 🙂 I don't expect that to happen with the current G-series, they seem to be built better than that.

Have fun with it and enjoy it! My G751 is no less current than it was an year ago and you don't get to say that a lot about many tech gadgets.

Luckily for me it came in A WHOLE DAY EARLIER than it should have. That never happens, mind you.

Im installing everything that 'currently' matters to me as we speak. I've got to take my mother to a doctors appointment within the next hour, so I am going to just let Steam download all of the games I want to test out while I am gone. 105mbps is a beautiful thing indeed.

Once I get home I will give each game a test run and see how they fare for me. Im not expecting to play anything at Ultra, but I will be more than content with being able to play my ENTIRE Steam library, as I have not been able to do that for the past few years without using someone else's computer.

These are least likely to give you problems. The cooling on the g751 and g752 is very good, cpu and gpu run cool most of the time, with desktop-like temperatures. Fans run all the time.

ALRIGHT. So, before I get into my sadness, I absolutely love this thing. It has ran everything I have thrown at it flawlessly. I can see myself enjoying this for several years to come....

....Now onto the sad part. The M1 key, one of the macros at the top, has never been used. I decided to put a function on it, and when I went to press it to make sure it worked....

The key came right off. Like, immediately.

I've tested every other key on the keyboard, and none of them feel like they're going to come off anytime soon, but this particular one came off super early. And I don't know what to do. No matter how I try to put it back on, it will only stay attached for a few presses and then one side of it comes up.

I really am not going to send the entire model back because of a single key, because god knows what could happen if I try to get a replacement model. It could have more problems than this one, and this isnt really a problem, just a disappointing situation.

....Other than that, I absolutely love this thing. ❤️

Oh, one more thing. My mic keeps picking up all of the sound of the computer. Is there anyway I can make that not happen without plugging in a headset? I really would like to be able to talk to my friends on Skype/Curse/Discord without having to use a headset. My previous laptop was able to do it, but the speakers are in the front of the laptop, and not behind the screen like they are on this one.

So that one key came off? that is strange. Have you googled this? I'm sure there is something out there about it. The mic issue is strange as well..My g752 is arriving next week...I'll certainly check it out on my machine to see if there are issues that match yours. There has to be a software tweak that will isolate the mic pick up.

I'm curious about the light bleed from the screen too

You can probably fix this. vore01 reply shows you the way. My comment is that be very careful the metal clips on the keyboard that hold bottom of the hinge are critical make sure they hold the bottom of the hinge and are not loose. If one of these clips breaks off you will have to replace the whole keyboard.
