Bought a G750JW-DB71 and a few questions

I am not exactly technologically enabled so please excuse any really stupid questions. I did a few searches and came up empty handed (that may be due to the hour :p) and was wondering about the first things I should do. I know there was a good thread for this on the G75 forum.

Here is the specific one I bought Link > http://www.amazon.ca/G750JW-DB71-CA-17-3-Inch-Notebook-Processor-Windows/dp/B00DHPP35M

So, first thing do backups. Download and use asus backtracker?

Any bloatware that should be removed? I read getting rid of the spledid? utility may help with any of the lines issues with the screen.

Where should I get updated drivers from and are there any that I should not update to the newest version at this point? Should I update the BIOS or leave it stock?

Asus live update (if it is on there) good or bad? I know on the G75s it could brick your system.

Any issues or quirks that I should be on the lookout for?

And lastly, any tips, tricks, or helpful hints for somebody that has never used Windows 8?

Thank you for any help.

I have G750JW DB71CA
Intel Core i7-4700HQ
FHD 17.3"
32GB Corsair Vengeance SODIMM DDR3L PC-12800 (1600MHz) 1.35-1.5V
6X BLURAY
750GB+750GB HDD
Win 8

I'm planning to buy SSD to replace the onboard 750GB main drive but i'm not an expert, so i have a few question

1. can we use ssd for storage (like split it to few partition) or use it just for booting/system drive (C:\)? for example using 480GB/512GB SSD on the first slot and split it into 2 partitions (C:\ for system and D:\ for storage), then put another 480GB/512GB SSD on the second slot then split it too (E:\ and F:\ both for storage)....cause i heard some people saids don't use ssd for storage, so i really need opinion/advice?

2. i'm an enggineer using autoca* 3D (on my old notebook TOSHI**, intel core i5, 8GBRAM...opening autoca* program take 1minute++ to opens and abot 30s to be in ready state, and rendering 3D design takes "lifetime") so i need to prepare my G750JW for that situation...now on my G750JW, opening autoca* takes plus minus 30s++ to open and additional 30s to be in ready state, i'm not rendering any design yet so i don't know the perform.........does change my HDD to SSD will solve some problems (waiting on app start and rendering 3D design)?

3. for my situation, can i have advice/opinion for SSD brand/spec cause i really need performance?

The volume icon is build in into win8 so no need for flashy taiwanese megaicons... 🙂

So i'm going to take the advice and have a SDD as a boot drive and windows and use the 2 X 1tb hdd RAID 0 as a storage.
How do i go about getting my windows files and default factory settings onto the SDD?
Do i create an image of the 2X 1tb hdd first, and then load that image onto the sdd and change the boot drive to sdd?
what utility is recommended?
after i make the SDD drive as the boot, do i just re-format the 2 X 1tb drives?
I'll be receiving my laptop in 2 days so i wanted to be ahead of the game and know what to do before it shows up.
Or is there a windows disc that it comes with and i just load the factory default settings onto the sdd?
Thanks for any help in advance!!!!

Awesome. Thanks for the response, I know that question has probably been asked and answered a dozen times but right now my phone is the only access to the internet that I have and searching through a sea of webpages is a pain. 🙂

Guys,

Bought same model from XOTICPC. After one week, laptop would not boot. Back to XOTICPC.com and then to ASUS to replace motherboard.:ASUS makes own motherboards. After 5 weeks received it back. Within two weeks, battery would not charge: Even new would not charge past 87%. Sent back to XOTIC PC to ASUS to have battery and power block replaced. Was told I needed an UPS. Got an APC Back-UPS 550G as recommended by both APC and XoticPC. Have had laptop for 2 weeks now and battery charges to 100% within 10 minutes or so. Very happy now after 5 months of problems. Love the backlight keyboard.

Hi people!

I plan to get a G750JM (maybe JS if I hear that's better from stability point of view). My problem is that all over this forum people seem to buy their machines with Win8 preinstalled. In my country it comes with FreeDOS. It's cheaper, but I need to buy Win8 anyway ... On the other hand I will not worry about restore partitions as there will be none.

QUESTION:
If I am to install everything myself (I understand it's doable), including Win8 OS, is it a better bet to get the JS rather than JM? This is in reference to the BSODs, USB3, sound, LCD luminosity, etc. From what I read I feel the JS is more stable, but I'm not sure I want to pay more on a hunch.

Also if there's any other reason (temperatures!?) to choose one instead of the other, I'e be grateful for advice.

Thank you!

Cheers!
