BIOS update for G750JW

Hi there,

I'm planning on updating the BIOS on my G750JW which came with the 210 version I think (Under XTU in BIOS version i see G750JW.210 so I suppose this is it right?).

I need your help please before launching the process.

So firstly what stable BIOS version do you advise me to get? Please note that i'm Under Win8 64bits and planning to stay that way (not switching to Win8.1 for now)
Secondly once updated the BIOS do I need to update my drivers? If yes which ones are critical?
What particular précautions should I take before/during the process?
And lastly : should anything go wrong after the update can i downgrade to my actual BIOS version (201)? and how?

for the JW we are on BIOS 208. Everything works flawless. When you apply a BIOS patch, that's it, they are cumulative. Why would you want to reverse? Newer BIOS handle the hardware better. I am on Win8 as well, no need for 8.1 either.
Updated BIOS (basic input/output system) has nothing to do with the drivers.Nevertheless, keep updated with drivers. As already mentioned, graphics drivers are key for the gaming (some are better than others - you can downgrade drivers if new ones unstable; sometimes it happens for some games).
For BIOS update, keep computer plugged. If your computer loses power while flashing new BIOS your PC becomes paper-weight. If your computer loses power while updating drivers, that can be fixed.

Question please Maxter : have you noticed a change in FAN cycle or in temperatures (GPU / CPU) after BIOS Update.

I am asking that because generally the BIOS updates affects the FANs regime cycle!

Nope. Fans work just as needed. New BIOS (208) only affected CPU behavior under battery. It is much better now.Temperature hovers around 40-45 for iddle, and below 60 for gaming. Make sure there is nothing under laptop and at least 6 inches from the back wall for optimal cooling.

Maxter, good advice, except the G750's need a lot more room than 6 inches behind the laptop to keep cool.

The G750 exhaust fans put out a lot of heat that will collect behind the laptop, and migrate under and to the front where the still heated air will get sucked back in to the laptop.

We have seen people putting the G750 on a desk next to a wall, or worse in a cornet, and start to cook their laptop - angling the G750 exhaust off the edge of the desk, toward an open space beyond the desk works best. If you move the desk so that it is a few inches from the wall to promote air flow, that helps too.

I see... I'm usually around half foot from the back, but running it on powersave mode (i share an office so I want it quiet). It hovers around 40-45C.

Maxter, that is how I got caught up the first time, I tested during low usage times for heat blowback, but when I finally got active on the laptop and loaded it up, really generating heat, that is when I felt the heat on my body coming off the desk - blowing off the back wall, coming under the laptop and heating up my chest.

The exhaust heat has to go somewhere...if it can't rise off the back / sides of the area behind the laptop, it will blow back and collect over time.

If you watch temps, and have low usage, you can get away with tighter conditions some of the time, but keep watching.

I use my computers, keep them loaded more often than others, many people are surprised just how hot my Macbooks get when they see mine elevated with something to help cooling - mine are always running with high fan and hot corners.

The only G750JW BIOS's posted by Asus in the G750JW support are are 208, 207, 206, and I don't see any others.



I usually use CPU-Z to find out the BIOS info, but I just checked XTU, and sure enough, under System Information, there is a BIOS section, and mine lists the correct one:



So, if XTU is telling you you have BIOS 210, then you have a newer BIOS than is posted for download in the G750JW area 🙂

You can file a Technical Inquiry with Asus and ask them what is up with having a newer BIOS than is available online... and why haven't they uploaded the 210 BIOS to the G750JW area.

You can verify your BIOS info using CPU-Z, check the Motherboard tab.

I wouldn't worry about downgrading, but you can by adding a /nodate option to the shortcut for winflash execution. I have done it a few times before.

The BIOS is independent from the OS, for the most part, but if you aren't on Windows 8.1 yet, now is the time 🙂

Take care to download all the updated Windows 8.1 drivers available for your hardware, update to all the available Windows 8.0 updates, then go into the Windows Store to do the Windows 8.1 upgrade, then install all the new drivers for Windows 8.1 you downloaded, and then do all the Windows 8.1 updates... should take a couple of hours.

The G750JW drivers are out of date, the BIOS / Manual are about all you should watch for updates there. The new G750's have the latest Windows 8.1 updates, with future updates to be found in the central update areas, and newer Asus ROG laptops. Here is the list I work from to find the latest updates.

Here are the Asus posted VGA drivers, it's better to get the latest from Nvidia - currently 337.88, except for the JM/JS/JZ owners you probably want to keep using 332.60 to avoid random crashes - as reported by a lot of people.
