Hello 🙂
I currently have 1x 2TB SSD installed with a spare slot. My question is, what's the maximum capacity of SSD I can install in that second slot? I have spoken to an Asus representative and he said maximum should be 2TB per slot because there can be overheating issues if you installed a higher capacity SSD than the recommended in a single slot which could potentially void warranty if damage occurs related to this. Has any one faced any overheating issues so far if you went for higher than 2TB per slot (because I am tempted to buy a 4TB SSD)? And once I have 2x SSDs in place, will the file system show these as two separate drives C: and D:?
Do you recommend RAID 0 set up or just keep it as two separate drives? I am assuming majority will say the latter. And if so, how do you manage your files and apps and how do you decide which drive from the two to store them on. I will be installing maybe around 5 games. CoD Warzone, Fifa, Tekken, Rocket League and Car racing game (maybe Forza - recommendations are welcome as I am looking for a high-graphic split screen multiplayer game to play with friends on a camping trip with two Xbox controllers connected). I will also be doing lots of programming work as well as photoshop/premiere/after effects work for video editing. Shall I keep all the games only in D drive (2nd SSD slot) and the rest of the files and project work in C: main? Thinking ahead in case of any drive failures or if I run out of storage later down the line and I have to buy a higher capacity SSD,
Your help/advice will be appreciated.
Cheers

Hello,
Do you definitely have a spare slot, visually seen yourself? The model you quoted unless there are regional differences is shown as having 2x1TB drives configured in a RAID 0 array.
I would be tempted to ask how does a 4TB nvme drive cause the laptop to overheat as it makes no sense. Unless this person is suggesting that the extra heat emitted from a 4TB drive will significantly impact the laptop's overall temperature? I will agree provided the 4TB is actually on fire, some can run hot without any cooling pad. Anyway I can't comment on support other than to say 4TB should actually work per slot, we are in 2025 and its a modern CPU / chipset. (I did a quick search and others have used 4TB, scar 16 https://rog-forum.asus.com/t5/rog-strix-series/rog-strix-scar-16-2024-nvme-upgrade-info/m-p/996115 )
Yeah 2 drives will show up and 2 drives, C and D, once the new one is formatted.
For the best possible performance have games on a different drive than the operating system.
If your work is important always have 2 copies so if it doesn't take a lot of space keep in on C and D? Or get a USB C nvme enclosure and cheap 1TB drive as a backup. (this will be limited to around 1000MB/s so no point getting a fast nvme for external use) Eg, https://sabrent.com/collections/nvme-enclosures/products/ec-snve

Hey,
Thanks a lot for coming back to me. I definitely have got a spare SSD slot. Have now just ordered 4TB SSD. And yeah, I just don't see how a 4TB could heat any more than the 2TB version. Or signficantly enough to damange motherboard.
As per your advice, will keep the games on this new drive.
Thanks again!
