Asus ROG 551jw - clean install WIn 10 questions

Hello everyone,

I recently got my first Asus laptop (551), and I'm very satisfied so far. I run Windows 10 (came pre-installed) in a dual-boot with Ubuntu. Please have me excused if these questions are fairly basic, but since this is my first Asus computer I would just like to take a few precautions.

1) I would like to have a Windows USB or boot option in case I need to format, or clean install from scratch. How would I go about making an installation device? Also, is it true that Windows 10 has the license linked to the hardware, or would I still need a serial to verify the install. I can't seem to find any recovery parition or similar, so I'm assuming Asus don't ship with this?

2) Are the basic drivers needed at install found easily somewhere? I assume I can download most from this website, but just wondering. I also noticed a folder called "eSupport" that has a sub-directory called "Drivers". Does this package include only drivers, Asus software, both or something entirely different?

Thank you so much for any help.

1) Best thing to do is make the spare recovery media using ASUS backtracker - http://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1008641/
This will allow you to do factory restore, think you need at least a 16GB USB stick to do.

2) All the drivers are located on ASUS' website for download.

1) You can make a USB Bootable Windows with the Media Creation Tool of Microsoft (Windows 7/8 or 10) you need to select Windows 8 or 10 with Single language linked to your platform, the encrypted license key is inside your UEFI bios, you can find this one by using tool like rweverything go to ACPI, check MSDM and you will find your key linked to your laptop.

2) Make a list of every drivers you need (Device manager, copy past their ID on google for example) and check each component brand, take their last update, it take time but at least you know that you have the last know update and a system more fresh/clean without any extra software.

Enjoy 😉

No need to go hunting for drivers. If you have the factory image still on the machine they are all located C:\esupport . Just copy that folder to removable media and you have everything that came on the laptop including drivers and software and you can choose what you do and don't want.

Just don't use a Microsoft ID when logging into Windows 10, otherwise an encryption key is stored on OneDrive and use of another boot device may be locked:
