Exactly. We fed back that people wanted it for better battery life etc, they put it in, now others don't want it...
MarshallR, it is the implementation that is the problem. Besides being completely useless - there are hardly any battery improvements - a bad trade off for the lost flexibility by putting the Nvidia video output through the Intel iGPU, and lost Nvidia control options when it goes through the Intel iGPU.
And, the added heat that having the onboard iGPU in use 100% of the time adds to the CPU temp, increasing the average CPU temp +10C on AC power. And, much more, just check the forums for user feedback on the results of the G750JM/JS/JZ implementation.
There are other implementations of Optimus that aren't as bad, you can disable Optimus in BIOS or with a switch, isolating the Nvidia / Intel outputs behind a display switch - that way the Intel iGPU isn't powered on and video isn't coming through the Intel iGPU from the Nvidia GPU when the Intel iGPU isn't in use.
Apparently the MSI GT72 implements the switch method, requiring a reboot to switch between GTX980m and the Intel HD4600:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/8605/msi-gt72-dominator-pro-performance-preview/5"One interesting tidbit is that the GT72 doesn't actually implement NVIDIA's Optimus Technology. This will cause some controversy I'm sure, as a reboot cycle is now required to switch between the Intel HD 4600 and the GTX 980M, and many users will likely just leave the GTX 980M enabled and forget about the Intel Processor Graphics. (There's a button to the left of the keyboard that switches between GPUs.) I don't know (yet) what the end result will be in terms of battery life, but there are a few users out there that really dislike Optimus for a variety of reasons (e.g. it doesn't play well at times with things like the Oculus Rift, apparently). If NVIDIA can get power use of the GTX 980M low enough at idle that it doesn't impact battery life too much, though, this could be the best solution for gaming notebooks."
A better implementation will win people back, I hope Asus is working on this, and I look forward to seeing how it is done in the G751
🙂Thanks Marshall!
