I have the Mixamp pro but can't I use a external sound card that has dolby digital live and that supports 7.1 sound

Sooooooo gay I can still return the astro should I just get a headset the gives virtual 7.1 sound through usb

Cartaspr is right, for 5.1/7.1 to work it has to be encoded in 5.1/7.1 and support pass-through. So any video or audio you play that's encoded in 5.1/7.1 and supports pass-through will work, but most games are not encoded in 5.1/7.1 and do not generate audio in 5.1/7.1 on the fly. For most games, you can choose Dolby Pro Logic or Bypass on the receiver/headphones. The surround receiver/headphones will still try to "upscale" to surround.

So what About battlefield 3 would I be able to use 7.1/5.1 sound

Yes you can and there are some external sound cards that support DDL like the ASUS Xonar U3, I’m actually thinking on buying it.

I just picked up a creative Recon USB adapter. For headphone gaming on a notebook I think it is hard to beat for positional audio on stereo headphones. Plus you can use any headphones with it..
