now, thats the important question 🙂
its the only way i would ever consider buying any replacement laptop.
what we really need is a hardware switch. one with a very satisfying click.
(or at least the option in bios to disable as required)

That's pretty unlikely, as much as users want the latter especially.

We customize Asus, MSI, and Clevo laptops!

The Alienwares 17 can all have a 3D screen; in this case Optimus is totally disabled. So it can be done.
I don't know if these Alienwares have a "special" BIOS or just have a smartly written BIOS, who disables Optimus when it detects a 3D 120Hz screen. It wasn't possible on the latest G750 because of the weird & bad choice of Asus concerning the "interface" between the Intel GPU and the Geforce.

I have seen a thread on the Alienware 17 forum where it's explained how you can add a 3D screen to ANY Alienware 17 : you need the screen of course, plus a special cable (tricky to get, apparently), and some courage to open the rig and modify it.

I have an Alienware 18, the way to switch the graphics is you press FN + F5 on the keyboard then the laptop reboots and switched the graphics card. Once it's switched, the system does not see or know you have the Intel Graphics HD 4600, that way, there is never any confusion if a game is actually running on the integrated graphics or the dedicated GPU, no headaches at all, no messing around with the global settings in the nVIDIA panel or anything like that. You switch once and you don't even know you have an integrated graphics unless you really need longer battery life if you're out then you *can* switch to the Intel HD Graphics with a simply FN+F5/reboot 🙂

ASUS can easily implement that and save us the headaches
