ASUS G750JY... a slap in the face to G751 owners?

I mean seriously, ASUS are bringing out a new version of an old and classic design with a 980M, that I am sure they are aware people prefer (otherwise logially why release an old design?) due to the sleek back design and white keyboard keys that are easier to see and read? Can they have any more contempt for their customers, ie: G51 owners? Absolutely bizarre.

Info here http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/G750JY/

So yeah, I am now really annoyed as I would have loved to buy a laptop with that design and the G751 specification...

And the best part of the slap is... 8GB GDDR5.

And, the back-slap is... drum-roll... the G750JY has Optimus.

Why wouldn't they take the best thing about the G751, no Optimus, and take the best thing about the 980m, 8GB VRAM, and slap them together.

And don't forget, the G751 has a non-removable battery, and the G750 likely still has a removable battery.

Making it the worst of the best, and the best of the worst all at the same time 🙂

They can disable the Optimus with a little change in the motherboard design.
The G750JZ had better cooling system than the G751JY.
I wonder if they change the TN panel to IPS.

Also...

Tindrael, nice graphic 🙂

In all actuality the 980m 8GB will perform exactly the same on 99% of the games as the 4GB version. Unless the 8GB version has faster clocked VRAM and/or GPU, then it will be a tad faster on everything... I guess we won't know till someone does a side by side spec / performance comparison, including OC testing.

It would be a redesign of the motherboard and MXM card to change it to choose either Intel/Optimus or Nvidia video out - to get the video out of the Nvidia GPU and/or the Intel GPU would require additional redesign work - over and above the design of either the G750 or G751.

That would be optimal, if done right, we would all be happy with our own choice.

At 1080p that isn't an issue... only at 4k resolutions would that be a problem, and the 980m hasn't really got the horsepower for that.

Yeah I completely forgot about the TN panel... definitely a no-go for me. As for the cooling... how is it better?

I attached pictures of the G751 and G750 cooling.

Tindrael, but, the JZ/JS/JM CPU's all ran hotter than the JW/JX/JZ, likely due to Optimus - the Intel GPU enabled added heat to the CPU die.

And, the G751 temperature reports are all lower than the JZ/JS/JM, down around the JW/JX/JH range.

IDK how Asus did it, but the new G751 cooling system, while looking not up to the challenge, is delivering great low temperature results.

There are already 2 G750JY threads and it seems it's an IPS, a 1920x1200 IPS (because only peasants have a 1920x1080 IPS display 😄 )

Are you implying they are using an old technology? Because nobody knows how much of the G751JY's advancements are going into the G750JY.

Joystick, only observing that the results attained by the new G751 cooling system are better than the G750JZ cooling tech in that it accomplishes the same cooling range with what appears to be much smaller components - and a combined cooling system - rather than the larger, bulkier, and independent CPU/GPU cooling systems in the G750JZ.

I have no idea what cooling the G750JY will have, but if it is the same as the JZ image posted, it won't be better than the G751JY and the temps might be higher - especially under the burden of the Optimus Intel GPU die heat.

We haven't seen anything of the internals of the G750JY yet, or have a firm grasp on what features / specs it actually contains.

It could go either way 🙂

Update: It looks like the new G751 cooling has it's limits. While giving great low temperature readings for most usage, under extreme load simultaneously on both CPU and GPU, the G751 starts Thermal Throttling - but it is right on the edge, and a 50/50 chance it will Thermal Throttle based on tests from several machines - and Ambient temperature contributes to this.
