Asus G750J and Surround Sound

I have a G750J and would like to connect the laptop to a Surround Sound System. I am wondering what is the most efficient way to do this to get high quality sound? I have an AV receiver with speakers and subwoofer which is connected to my TV and DVD player using HDMI. What do I need to connect my G750J to the AV receiver? It looks like I can use a Toslink to Mini Digital Optical SPDIF Audio Cable to my audio receiver. What type of signal (e.g., 5.1; 2.1) is available from the headphone out jack? I currently have an external 23” monitor connected to the laptop using a HDMI cable. Is there any benefit to splitting the HDMI output and sending it also to my AV receiver in addition to the external monitor?

Thanks for any guidance.

I'm trying to figure this one out myself. I'm in the very same place atm as you! Have you figured it out?

I didnt :-(. I bought external sound card ASUS Xonar U7 for multiple reasons.

At home have powered USB 3.0 hub with mouse, keyboard, soundcard and exteral hdd in it. So i just connect all my audio (5.1 speakers + headphones) and all my accesorry by one usb plug. 🙂

Its little bit shame G750 doesnt support surround. I had many hopes for optical ouput as that should support surround. I never found out how to set it from stereo to multiple speakers. Also the optical output in G750 is some new technology and it not in visible spectrum. My speakers are plaing it only in stereo however it says "no device" on the speaker controll unit. With Xonar everithing works 🙂 And sound is also a bit better. I use 3,5mm jacks to take advatange of Cirrus DAC that Xonar have 🙂
