Asus g74sx power and black screen problem

Its been about 3 weeks since I got my new g74sx and yesterday I had a problem with having a black screen when I turn on my laptop.

The asus support instructed me to hold the power button for 45 seconds to release the in-built statics (unplugged power cord and take out battery) and it the laptop started working.

But the same problem happened today (laptop is running with black screen) and I tried doing what the asus support told me and hold the power button for 45 seconds. BUT this TIME, I tried pressing the power button again (with power cord plugged in) to start the laptop but the laptop ended up dying on me. NOTHING can turn on. The matter gotta worse and I called the asus support again and they told me to ship the laptop so they can fix it.

Anyone know what was the problem for have black screens 2 days straight that resulted to the laptop dying?

Are you still within your retailer's exchange/return period? If so, don't RMA your laptop. Exchange it for a new unit and let ASUS worry about the problem.

I have read of some laptops being brought back to life by reseating the memory and HDD's. But I would quickly check if you could exchange the system first.

do I have the authority to exchange for a new laptop??

Where did you purchase the laptop? The exchange/return period varies among retailers. Amazon allows 30 days.

If you can't exchange because they don't have your model in stock, but can still return it for a refund, take the money! If you really like the laptop, you can always purchase it from another retailer or wait until it is back in stock.

For those of you who have just purchased an ASUS laptop or are considering purchase - KNOW your retailer's exchange/return period and test your system immediately after delivery (http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?9956-Thinking-of-joining-you-all..)

The key point here is don't get stuck with a defective laptop if at all possible. Otherwise, you might end up looking like this:

hmm, this is very weird. My laptop suddenly works again. I tried doing the holding power button for 30 seconds and plug the power cord back in and all of a sudden, it worked.

I am worried that the same problem will occur in the future since it happened 2 days in a row already.

I don't know if the laptop is infected or not, so should I still replace it for a new one?

If the exchange option is available to you, that's what I would recommend. You never know when it will act up on you again.

Mine seems to have did the same thing, but holding the power button in did no good. Its 2 months old so I guess it going back to maufactturer to be repaired.

I would try reseating the memory and HDD(s) as a last attempt to avoid an RMA.

I remain amazed reading threads like http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?11968-G73JH-Black-screen-( where a definite hardware problem is indicated and the user disassembles the laptop, finds no problems, and it works fine on startup after reassembly.

But to move beyond reseating the memory and HDD's in a G74, you have to be capable and confident of your ability to work on the innards of laptops and know when you will void the warranty.

BLACK SCREEN PROBLEM! SOLVED:

First of all I want to say hello to all you guys here on forum and before I start explaining how to fix this issue I want to mension what laptop I have:

ASUS G75V
Processor i7 Q3630
HDD 750GB
nVidia GTX670 MX * 3GB
8GB RAM
17.3"
WIn8

...this was configuration after I buy it. Then I decide to upgrade it with +8GB of RAM and one 120GB SSD as a C: drive.
Everything was perfect few days after I buy it, after that I have problem like you guys, I have logo of ROG and ater that nothing, just black screen). In some time I need to restart it 10-15 times to get in WIN8. I try everything that is inside this thread but no success 😕

Maybe you notice that after ~5 restart of your laptop, you have a message something "Do you want to repair your computer?", because windows8 recognize that you can not enter to it. What I did, I go inside this option and I can not remember exactly the name of the option, but try to find something like "Refresh your PC". He will ask you two (2) options more:
1) Do you want to save files and folder from C: drive (win8 withou program but files from lets say Desktop and User will be left), or
2) You don't want to save files (so, Win8 will be refreshed without any programs, files,..from previous windows)

I choose 1st option and I save my files. After that my laptop has been restarted automatically and he do a "Refreshing" something around 20min. Basically he install WIN8 again and install all nessesary drivers (ASUS programs also).

After that my computer work fine. Here past one month and I didn't receive any black screen issue anymore!!!

Off course, after this step you will have two folders on C: drive. "Windows" and "Windows.old". You can find how to delete this folder on YT, or Google as well.

Of course, this mean that ISSUE regarding to this problem is with DRIVERS, and I thing that is Graphic Card drivers. Because now Im updating windows, antivirus, programs, but not nVidia drivers, and everything works perfect. So the thread that one of you type "I try to roll back my graphic drivers and nothing change" is wrong! Something is wrong with drivers obliously.

Also, I said to myself if this problem back again, I will try to remove battery and to remove 16GB of RAM, wait 20sec and back all try to run it. But luckly, I dont need to do that. This thing with "Refreshing PC" works. And be sure to not update nVidia graphic drivers.

Best regards

lol. i'm glad you have your problem solved but i just to want to say something to you..
everytime a new nvidia driver comes out i install it. except some 297.xx version that made TF2 crash and other OS malfunctions, i have never had an issue with drivers from nvidia/realtek/atheros/intel chipset with the G74.,

i really think the problem is your RAM..
