Asus G74sx Freezing

In the past two months i have had problems with freezing. The freezing only happens during gaming, such as skyrim and BF3. I have never seen it happen on the desktop. Its very hard to troubleshoot because it happens very rarely. The whole computer just freezes, no BSOD. I have to hard reset my computer. I ran memtest86 with no errors. I have clean installed my nvidia drivers to 301.24 beta drivers.

Ok I'm getting buzzing sound from the speakers, the computer locks up completely and I have to hard restart.

I get no errors just stops (its happening a lot (between 1~5 times a day)) last time was today running the first dungeon siege a game thats not really that demanding . It mostly happens in Batman AC (when going up the wonder tower).

I'm running Microsoft essentials for my AV/MW, my graphic driver is 296.16 but was happening on 296.10.

I have the G74SX, 16GB Ram, 560m 3GB, i7 2670, Atheros AR9002WB-1NG Wireless Network Adapter (latest driver). this is the second Asus G74SX I've had the first went back as the left speaker was faulty. originally purchased in October.

I've tried to answer all the common question in the thread, is their anything else you need .


Oh other current issue is the A, 3 and the left arrow key doesn't work if you hit them on the top half. Making my WASD into a WSD. I have a gaming laptop that doesn't like to turn left! (It makes me very ngry).

I'm glad that you found out the latest beta version have some bugs that did make your notebook unstaible, and fixed it 🙂

You could download the latest certified and optimized driver from Asus for GTX 460/560M:

As usual we recommend not downloading from 3rd party driver sites as you'll never know if it has hidden malware.

If you get issues with that driver also, then you can always turn back to the 285.62 WHQL until nVidia release a new graphic driver 🙂

This happens 'only' when 'gaming or watching a video' ? As in .. online gaming and online streaming video ?

This was an early issue with CH IV E and CH V F ... it was the NIC driver.

I have this problem too roughly 2-3 times a month. Just happened 5 minutes ago after an hour on youtube. ASUS just released a new driver 301.42. I am going to upgrade and see how it works out.

I just got it for the first time too. Funny, I fix one problem and another one pops up. I already have the 301.42 Nvidia driver. And it just happened after I shut down Skyrim after a 3 hour session.

Mine did this 2 times as well. Strangely I was watching youtube videos both times. Not sure about what causes it.

Interesting reading this - I only recently bought myself a g74sx, and after only putting on an anti-virus (AVG) and bf3, along with some benchmark programs & chrome, the laptop too starts freezing up when I'm web browsing. I haven't been gaming much so haven't had it freeze while gaming yet. I updated my driver to the latest GTX560m driver by Nvidia, and my benchmark performance went up heaps, but am concerned this might infact be the issue as to why it's freezing. When it freezes during a YouTube session, I can't even ctrl+alt+del to get to task manager, it just completely locks up the laptop, but the mouse still moves on the screen. I'm unsure as to whether this is the same freezing that others are experiencing, but the system never recovers and I have to reboot. Happens when using both Chrome and iExplorer.

1) What version WiFi driver are you running?

2) What version video driver are you running? Do you observe any video corruption (pink screen, tearing, stuttering) prior to the lockup?

I have the Similar Problem during playing game. Such as Maxpaine 3, Skyrim, batman, seems it random happens on every latest games.
But it never happens on the desktop. latest whql driver 301.42 from the nvidia website.
