i have a question and suggestion,
i just got the g74sx-bbk9...im new to upgrading a laptop.
im wondering which is the best ram kesington or crucial?
can i upgrade my dvd optical to blue-ray?
im using my laptop for design and some games.:cool:

RAM is mostly a commodity these days, so brand isn't as important as buying from a retailer that'll take it back (without hassle) if you get a bad module. (If you are adding to the existing RAM, it's best to try and match what's already in your machine.)

ODDs are eaily upgradable. You can find some options on Amazon, Newegg, and the Asus eStore.

Check out fostert's posts about this...he's the G74 memory-max expert around here! (I believe you need to upgrade to Windows Pro or Ultimate to be able to use anything above 16Gbs.)

i was just about to mention about that thread, but for now im looking for best software for overclocking, before i only use cpu-z, any recommendation of any other software?

You can't OC the CPU in the G74. First the 2630 and 2670QM are multiplier-locked versions, which would be hard to OC (unless you could change the base clock, but then your uncore and memory subsystems would scale up with that too!). Second, the G74 has a completely crippled BIOS when it comes to tweaks. You'd need a) an XM (extreme) version CPU, and b) an overclocker-friendly BIOS.
CPU-z wouldn't allow you to overclock anyways: its just an information display tool.

Yep, you can stuff the G74 with 4x8GB sticks (=32GB) and get it all addressed! Brody is right: Windows Pro or Ultimate is needed to gte your OS to address it all, otherwise it will report 32GB but that it is using only 16GB.

They're pretty much all the same, since ultimately the ICs are all bought from just a handful of manufacturers (e.g. elpida), and as long as they're error free 1333MHz Cas Latency 9 is the same no matter who makes 'em. Buy from a manufacturer with a lifetime warranty, like Corsair. I got four of these (http://www.corsair.com/memory/notebook-memory-upgrades/value-select-8gb-ddr3-sodimm-memory-kit-cmso8...) in my G74 giving me 32GB of RAM.

Whatever you get the first thing you should do is test the sticks together in your notebook with memtest86+ for 3 passes (an "overclocking" standard for stability testing and the best way to give memtest the chance to pick up any errors in the memory). If you find errors then test the sticks in pairs and individually until you narrow down which one contains the bad chips: then RMA it. Corsair will immediately replace any stick that fails memtest even if just one error is found (enough to randomly BSOD your system!).
