Asus G46 keep at 100% fully charge is good or bad?

Hi guys,

This might sound dumb to ask, but is there anyway to set the threshold for the battery of G46. I know G46 has a great battery life but i hate it at the same time too because it takes forever to wait for the battery to drain to like 20% so that I can plug in the charger and play game. The reason I do that is because I don't want to plug in the whole time and have the battery stay at 100% because that would lower the capacity of the battery over time.

What should I do guys? Can I play game on battery instead? And if I do so, would that hurt the battery because gaming usually consume a lot of power and battery doesn't like to drain too fast either.

This is tricky!!! Please give me your opinion

Welcome to the forums!

If you don't mind, please check this thread G46 not fully charging battery which should help answer your question, but basically, the battery will automatically stop charging once it reaches 100%, so you don't need to worry about this issue.

Thanks for the respond but I don't think that thread is my problem though. My Asus can charge to 100% without any problem. The problem is that once it is at 100%, I have to unplug the charger since I have no idea if it will overcharge if I keep it in. And the thing is that this is annoying because we know we can't get full performance on battery. I can set the system to run at high performance and play game on battery but that would drain the battery way to fast and I think it is not good for the battery to drain too fast right?

Instead of pulling the plug on the charger when the indicator reaches 100%, just leave it plugged in. I'll bet in a couple days the percentage will drop below 100%, and it will also say "not charging". This is what it is supposed to do. It will eventually start charging again, but I'm not sure what percentage the threshold is. It is not overcharging by doing this.

So you are saying that it is fine to leave it plugged in the whole time and I don't have to worry at all right? You say if we keep it plugged the whole time, it will finally drop the %, isn't it bad?/ or is it just the threshold of the battery that it will drop to the certain point and then charge again?

Yes, that is what I'm saying. Although I DO unplug mine if we are expecting storms with lightning. It won't hurt the battery to drop a few percent when it isn't charging (which it stops doing once it reaches 100%). ALL batteries slowly lose their charge just by sitting. You're putting far more wear and tear on your battery by running it down to 20% and then recharging to 100%. I don't recall at what exact percentage the battery will start charging again. I regularly see mine at 95%/not charging.

Although it probably doesn't hurt to run the battery down to maybe 20 or 30% once a month just to "exercise" it as it probably helps to keep the battery meter calibrated.

Thanks for your response,

Can you please explain to me why having it run down to 20% and recharge it back to 100% is more wear and tear? Is that because every time I do that the battery will count that as 1 cycle and it only has limit number of cycle? Meanwhile if I leave it at 100% then it will have to charge less and will last longer? If so then I kind of confused because I have seen so many people complaining their battery is dead because they have it plugged in all the time.

As it is for now, I will understand what you said is: It is ok to have the battery plugged in all the time, and do the (20% charge to 100%) once a month to calibrate the battery 😉

Where have you seen "so many people complaining their battery is dead because they have it plugged in all the time"? Just curious.

Mostly from my friend, they complained their battery died and they have to keep plug in all the time, otherwise the computer not gonna on because the battery doesn't want to hold charge. It is possible that their battery is old generation and could be overchargin. Also, I heard this problem back when people using Thinkpad T43 or T60

Modern power management built into hardware prevents 'overcharging' the battery. 🙂

But as mentioned above, it is a good idea to unplug it during an electrical storm.

Also: Regarding the discharge and recharge wear-and-tear; discharging the battery to 0% and recharging to 100% causes excessive wear on the cells. Users usually report that keeping it between 20% - 80% is ideal for longevity. But if you want to do a battery calibration, then it's ideal to fully charge it, then fully discharge it.
