An upgrade (W7 to W8) question

I purchased a G55VW for a smokin' price a few weeks ago, and have been mightily impressed with it. It blows the Lenovo U510 it replaced out of the water in all areas except weight, but I gave up on getting something this powerful under 5 pounds.

Anyhow, the model I have came with W7 Home Premium, and I bought the $14.99 W8 Pro upgrade from MS. I've read through the sticky thread about the upgrade process, and have everything lined up for that, but my question is in regards to the Asus apps.

The disc that came with the computer has all of the W7 apps and drivers, and all I can get from the Asus download site for W8 are the drivers.

Are any of the Asus or Cyber link apps available for W8? Do I need them in W8? If there are W8 versions, how do I get them, since they're not on the download page?

you can download from ASUS support site, it is ok for use.

w8 works fine in g55 with w7 preloaded. in fact it only needs a limited set of drivers to run properly.

you don't need cyber link apps. as for asus apps, you only need atk package.

I wasn't sure what apps were needed to run. I got W8 installed last night, and everything was working fine with the exception of the touchpad. It was working fine until I installed the Elantech drivers, then all multi-touch and gesture functionality disappeared. This is the reason I sent back the Lenovo - without a fully functional touchpad that supports multi-touch and gestures, Windows 8 is all but unusable. I uninstalled the ETD drivers this morning, and haven't had a chance to use it since then. If the Windows 8 native driver works, I'll use it until Elantech can write a driver worth installing.

i am using the elantech driver too (the one from asus). it works fine (well, i disable it most of the times because i use a mouse). perhaps you need to reinstall it, reboot and try again; you might need to double click the touchpad icon in the notification area and bring up the smart gesture thing and reconfigure it.

It took a while for the drive to kick in, which was annoying, but it finally caught up to me and is working now. Well, mostly. The multi-touch won't register on the start screen, which is where it is needed the most.

In related news, somehow the W8 load thoroughly borked up my Ubuntu dual-boot. I can get to Grub, but it can't find the RAM disk to load the OS. I couldn't even get the Ubuntu CD to boot in UEFI mode to fix it. I'll have some more time tomorrow to hammer away at it, but it shouldn't be this hard and frustrating

yes you need to wait for a bit after you've logged in to the windows, the drivers and apps related to elantech smart thing need some time to load to provide those touchpad functions.

imo, the better option to make dual boot is still BIOS install (the least problematic).
