About to purchase a G750. May I have some advice, please?

Hi everyone. With help from this forum, I've decided to plump for a G750, after my Acer 6935G suffered a........mishap.......

Either THIS G750JX

or THIS G750JM + an SSD. Perhaps THIS SAMSUNG

But I'm at a loss as to which to go for.

The 860M has definite appeal, but I'm just worried about all this Optimus stuff I keep reading about. Now I do like oldish games eg. Doom3, Quake4, even ye olde RTCW; and I don't mind a tinker, but I don't really want ball ache every time I install one.

Also I read that you can't up the frequency of the screen with Optimus enabled, which I also understand is a desirable thing to do.

I love the idea of Optimus, but it seems badly implemented and a bit restrictive.

I guess what I'm asking is:

Is it worth having the newer GPU and have Optimus, or the older GPU without Optimus? And is there anything else to consider between my choices apart from the obvious differences in spec?

If you guys and girls could point me in the right direction, I'd be very grateful.

Cheers. Rob.

Wiggs, awesome! 🙂

You really hit the sweet spot in the G750 line with the JX, and No Optimus 🙂

Don't forget to do an Asus Backtracker backup of the recovery partition to a 16GB USB 3.0 flash drive before going too far into setting things up - you want to have that as a safety net in case you need to restore/recover back to the out of the box configuration.

Then Windows 8 updates first, Windows 8.1 driver updates, Microsoft Store Windows 8.1 upgrade, Windows 8.1 updates, and the latest Nvidia driver from Nvidia's site, right now 337.88.

G750 support areas - The JM download area has the latest of all the G750, with JS/JZ next:

Here is the latest Notebook Audio - for G750 => Realtek driver package Version V6.0.1.7224

Here are the latest Notebook Bluetooth drivers

Here are the latest Notebook WLAN drivers

Here are the Asus posted VGA drivers, the JX can use the latest from Nvidia, but have this here for reference.

Here are my settings from my JX, for Asus GPU Tweak tool for Graphics cards (don't get the new version for Optimus G750's), you should be able to OC to that GPU clock, and somewhere near that memory clock. That along with Intel XTU enabling the full multi's for the cores will put you very close to the JH/JZ range, close enough to run most everything at Max settings fluidly.

And, if your JX comes with a Chi Mei screen, you can create a Custom Resolution (Refresh) in Nvidia Control panel to run it at 100hz. If you have an AUO, 70hz.

If you have a Chi Mei, you can download and install these ICC profiles for Color Correction - check out the whole thead, but here is the link to the re-posted upload links:

Don't forget to uninstall Asus Splendid, Asus Power4Gear, and anything else you think you don't need. At least Disable all the startup apps from Windows Task Manager Startup.

And, if you aren't familiar with using Windows 8.x, you can install Classic Shell and 8gadgetPack to make things Windows 7 familiar to start:

That all should keep you busy for a good little while 🙂

Have fun 🙂

Wow, that's really comprehensive! Great stuff!

I will certainly follow all those points. Thanks a lot, hmscott. 🙂

Asus CL Guys, can someone please look into getting JazJazJaz79 laptop back to him? At least get him an update.

Maybe send him something nice to make up for the aggravation? 🙂

Got her! Sort of unfortunately, I had an appointment tonight, so I haven't booted her yet, but am impressed with the look and quality of the G750. Feels a lot more solid than my Acer. Everything looks lovely from the outside.

Release notes!?

We don't need no stinkin' release notes! 😉

(Stolen from Mel Brooks, Blazing Saddles, "We don't need no stinking Badges!")

Do you see release notes on any other uploads?...

And, you won't. Sometimes BIOS's will have something obscure and/or incompletely stated.

Have you tried to read Microsoft Update details for, well, details? Same disappointment, except you go through lots of links and long diatribes on irrelevant tangential information.

Apparently, we don't need to know 🙂

Well I'm more than happy with this G750! It's brilliant.

Ghosted the original installation, combined some of the crazy Asus partitions, updated to Win 8.1, installed Classic Shell (ahhh thats better!), updated some drivers.

Not had a chance to do all of hmscott's suggestions just yet, but will do.

Got the AUO screen, and I'm happy enough with it. No flickering, or lines that I can see. No problems with the track pad, seems to operate as it should. No rattling from the subwoofer. It's all hunky dorey.

All in all, I'm a happy bunny!

Now to see what the temps are like.
