73JW Freezing + Static Sound

Retired
Not applicable
I've had a problem for 3 months now where whenever I play a game, my laptop will freeze and emit a static sound similar to a poorly tuned radio. I've updated every driver I can find, from USB, Audio, to GPU.

I'm at the brink of an RMA now, and really wish I could figure out what's going on.

The laptop has perfectly fine temperatures. It freezes within 10 to 15 minutes after starting to play a game. The only game I have found it won't freeze on is Lost Saga, a free MMO. League of Legends, some STEAM games, and a couple others will freeze and require a hard reboot.

So far I'm the only one who has had this particular freezing issue it seems....

Have you tried doing a clean install of your OS or restoring from the factory image? Also, have you updated the bios (the latest bios fixed the static sound issue on my 73JW). Finally, what hard drive do you have in your system? If it's one of the 500GB Seagate drives, there may be a bios update for that. I'd try the bios updates before a OS restore, but that's what I'd do before sending it out for RMA repair.

I did try the newest bios, 205 and they didn't fix it, I may look into bios for the hardrives though. I uninstalled Power4Gear cause another person had an issue with theirs, and creative THX drivers.

i experienced the dreaded static, you need an RMA. It's from faulty speakers/audio card or so they have said.

That really bites, wonder what the turn around is going to be on that. It's weird it never happens outside playing a game. I watch movies, youtube, and all sorts of other things and never get the freeze + static.

Well, if you're in the Northern CA area then your turnaround time might be pretty quick. I shipped my laptop out on a Monday from Sacramento to Milpitas, and it got back the following Friday. Granted it was a simple LCD and case swap, but they were quick about it. The laptop even beat the shipment notification email. They usually quote 7-10 business days on the phone, however. As always with things like this YMMV, but Asus did a great job of taking care of me. Best Buy could learn a thing or two from their service.
