5.1 gaming headset with G74SX

Hello,

As far as I know, reading from other topics from this forum the G74SX has an optical out via toslink hidden in the headphone jack. So, my question here is if someone managed to get 5.1 sound from the soundboard of the G74SX and how it was done.

Thx

are you sure your laptop have SPDIF?

I'm not sure but I've seen some people talking about the g74sx having it so I guess I need a way to check it out. Do you know some way to be sure of it?

This is a topic where a forum member comments that the headphone jack also is a spdif port.

There is in fact an optical output. However, it's only capable of stereo sound output. Best bet for a surround sound headset would be either a USB headset, or routing the HDMI to an A/V receiver and connecting an analog surround headset to that.

I guess then I will stick to a solution I just came that is buying a USB soundcard which will give me 5.1 analogical channels. Thanks for the replies.

You can also try an USB headphone like it was suggested, I have a Logitech G35 and it works perfectly fine. I will get a SoundBlaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro in a couple weeks tho. 😄

The problem is I already bought my 5.1 headphone so I guess I'll have to fix my mistake by buying an usb soundcard...

If you've already got an analog surround headset (out of curiosity, what do you have?) and can't return or trade them for a USB headset, then an external sound processor likely will be the best option for you. I know Creative makes one that supports analog 5.1 output. It's one of their X-Fi series. Haven't used one myself but it's supposedly pretty decent.

Curious to hear what you think of the X-Fi external, if you end up getting it. I've noticed that several true surround headsets utilize analog sound, along with the fact that the USB headsets require rely on the CPU to process the sound for them. Perhaps an external sound "card" would reduce reliance on the CPU and maybe even provide better overall sound than a USB headset.
