16GB ram on G73jh WORKS!!!

I was due to do my periodic cooling system cleaning on my g73jh, so I figured that since I was gonna have my machine open and that memory is so cheap these days why not try to do the upgrade from 8gb to 16gb ram AND IT WORKED! Despite intel's ark website stating that the mobile cpus can only support up to 8gb, 16gb works fine. According to cpu-z, windows task manager and even in the BIOS all 16gb show up and is available. I just wanted to let you guys know since I know many of you are on the fence on weather or not to do it and if it will or will not work.

Here are some screens:

DO you know that ASUS G73SW supports 32gb of ram 😉 .
but JH only supports 16gb.

Well I read about some people who were curious to try it but I never saw any confirmation that it worked. Pretty sweet if it does though ^^ However I still personally prefer the jh over the sw despite it's 2nd gen i7, just simply because its a gaming rig and the 5870m rocks abit harder than the GTX460m IMHO.

I would love to buy a g73sw and swap the gfx card with one from a jh. A 2nd gen i7 with 32 gigs of ram, a ssd and a 5870m would be freaking SWEET!

I want to tell you this I frekin got that idea but i have no $$$ .
a guy in ebay told to give his g73sw motherboard and gpu for 350$ shipped , so i was like to buy it but i though if buy it i have to replace cpu also. and to whom can i sell old parts 😄 . because i didnt know what was wrong in my laptop at first , few days bak got to know it was the gpu. so i just need to replace it to wake up my beast.
@mstcobra you cant make a ati card work on g73sw. but you could upgrade it to gtx 580 or gtx 560.

nonsence ... G73JH supports 32GB RAM (4x8GB) too, but not under Win7 HP (see https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa366778%28v=vs.85%29.aspx#physical_memory_....

Under W10 it is all ok.

As far as I understand the GPUs are soldered to the PCB itself - you won't be able to upgrade it. Even if it wasn't you'd probably suffer thermal and power issues due to the change in TDP and current draw.

no you are not educated in this matter, so do some research , only g74 uses soldered gpu but for g73 uses seperate gpu.
so you are ready to upgrade.

You'll still be risking drawing more watts from your supply than rated, and you may find you've exceeded the G73's cooling system capabilities with the new load. I don't think its worth the risk unless you're very familiar with specs. Certainly overclocking the new gpu will be out of the question. Carefully check the TDP of the new graphics chip, and compare with the old one's TDP. Can you power supply handle the new load?

On g73sw motherboard I seen two extra memory slots(or something similar :P), would it be possible to use them to add more memory to my 8gb or do I need to buy 2x 8gb and replace the existing 2 x 4gb ?

I think, there was 2 varianst for g73JH ... 3slots or 4slots motherboard. (One slot is on back side). May be, g73sw had same variants ?
